Ok heres the deal, super excited to start school and get out on the road. It's two hours before I head to the bus station, and I'm freaking out! I know all the pros and cons of this huge decision, but now hours before leaving I'm worrying about the wife and kids and how they will handle it! I have been telling my kids for a month now that I will be gone for about two months, 10 minutes ago they JUST got it and not liking it! Anyway I don't want to ramble on, but I'm one of those guys who love my wife and kids, and miss them a ton when gone, not like my wife's dad who loved to be away from them. I myself can deal with being gone for weeks at a time, but does anyone have any advice for helping the family get through it! Thanks in advance![]()
Anyone else feel like throwing up?

Cell phone, laptop with wireless card can help (unlimited everything plan)....speak with them every day, and if you have the laptop w/wireless, get a webcam if it isn't already built -in, and you can chat with them "face-to-face" through the camera.

I saw some pictures that my wifes Aunt and Uncle took while in Europe.
There kids got them a miniature garden gnome. Like the one in the travel commercial.
And they took pictures of it all over Europe.
What you should do, and I think other drivers should as well that have kids.
Is use something like that, or like in that one commercial with the stuffed monkey.
Take something they know, or they give you to use, and wherever you go take a quick pic of it in different places.
This way they know you are thinking of them all the time.
Just something to chat about in your daily talks.
It will be hard at first, but they will get use to it and really look forward to when you are home.spinner2jammer and simplyred1962 Thank this. -
I'd never make it these days without my laptop and webcam for "visiting" with the wife and kids through the week.

Talk as often as you can with the wife and kids. Tell them how much you miss them and love them. Also tell them, that this is all for them as well.. Be sure when you get home time, spend as much time with them as possible. My wife and kids were a little freaked out in the begining, but things went smoothly..

Hey Spinner -- I'm a newbie out on the road doing the final 65 hours of my 300 hours with Werner, and I'm one of those types that definately wants to be with my family versus some of the other folks I've talked to that are on the road to escape home.
I went to an unlimited account on my cell phone after racking up a ton of phone calls in the first two weeks! (yikes!) I have wifi and a webcam on my netbook but I can only get in touch at truck stops that have wifi (ka-ching!) or if I'm lucky enough to be parked next to a place with free wifi...so I'd recommend doing the math and going to an aircard, etc as others have suggested.
One other thing--when you get to the point you or your family can do it, put together a small photo album of your family, pets, and favorite things. I like being able to flip through my photo album at night before I zip up the sleeping bag, and first thing in the am....or when I'm feeling down. It's nice to have the "hard copy" versus electronic stuff on your computer. Sure helps keep things in perspective as you work hard to reach your goals.
Take care, and good luck! The folks here on this forum are a tremendous help in getting through those newbie blues!
Oh, and one more thing--keep the lines of communication open. Sometimes you'll be feeling down at the same time your family is feeling down, and it's hard to for everyone to not be cranky during those times. Realize this for what it is and don't let it be misconstrued as anything but loving people missing each other.SuchatruckinLady, simplyred1962, spinner2jammer and 2 others Thank this. -
Also remember that money is a good motivator so it will help ease the burden when it starts coming in.
