Indeed, I did it in traffic once and scared or PO'd drivers, now I only do it if I know it's safe like a kid on the side of the road and no cars around me.

    Hogwash......safety first always!
Even if a driver is distracted or just a jumpy person, or just a bad driver and loses control because they were startled by your airhorn isn't a good enough excuse for being unprofessional and setting up a dangerous situation IMHO.

The Prostar I drive has a weak air horn...the look of displeasure on a kids face after I blow it is priceless.

Boy howdy!.........I was running down the 5 Southbound on my Harley last week going home from the yard after work and didn't see the Amtrack cruising along just behind me.
It laid on the horn going through Kalama and scared the bejesus out of me lol.
My butt must have come 10" off the seat!

That's kinda how I feel. I cannot resist.

However, I don't lay it on. I give them 2 short toots.

I did the same thing. It's precious to see the look of surprise on their little faces. However I only would do it if the kiddies were standing along the sidewalk, their yard or other such. I'd never do it if they were in a car.

I did it as a kid and it thrilled me, and my brother when we'd get a response from the driver of that big truck. I agree, it'd be un-American NOT to give em a good honk. Only problem with my Prostar is the sick sounding horn isn't what I wish it was.

The other day I responded with the city horn because the kids window was down and I didn't want to scare his mom to death. He was clearly disappointed, but I bet mommy was pleased I didn't give her the master blaster version!

There may be some validity to the accident causing scare factor though, because once when I was an EMT and gave the siren a yelp while enroute to an emergency call, an elderly gentleman ran his car into the hedgerow in the median of the city street. Oops! You didn't have to do that! Lol!
