Anyone ever get stopped or hassled about drop visors?

[h=3]§ 393.60(e) Prohibition on obstructions to the driver's field of view—(1) Devices mounted at the top of the windshield. Antennas, transponders, and similar devices must not be mounted more than 152 mm (6 inches) below the upper edge of the windshield. These devices must be located outside the area swept by the windshield wipers, and outside the driver's sight lines to the road and highway signs and signals.[/h]Notice it says 'mounted' . I'm not sure what that means. The whole piece or the mounting points - the brackets - which are usually above the windshield.

In any case you still have the wiper sweep area and driver's sight lines to signs and signals to contend with.


In the old days when they'd put those big visors on cars, I guess late 30s, 40s, They'd have traffic light viewers on their dash or cowl to see a traffic light above them.

 

Almost as ridiculous as having the air dumped out of the seat so your head is just barely above the bottom of the side window...with an extended hood. Could put an entire football field in the blind spot out in front of the truck.

As for the drop visors, my glass guy says they are a pain in the rear...hates them with a passion.

Next they will tell Peterbilt drivers they can no longer sit way back & on the floor when driving.

 

That would be a good thing.

 

I personally like sitting on the floor and seat back. Its a better ride in my opinion. I still see everything just fine and still bounce around doing my deliveries with no issues. If they made drop visors for my sterling I'd buy one.

 

I hate anything that restricts my vision or increases my blind spot in front. This is especially an issue on the all wheel drive trucks because they are a foot higher.

My personal issue with visors is that they get in the way of washing the truck.

 

Factory my Wipers go to the top of the windshield therefore making my factory visor illegal if it's within the swept area of the windshield.

 

dot told me one time that the visor cannot be lower than the top of the wiper area...................................just my 2 cents

 

Seems odd that OEMs would mount drop visors if they were flat-out illegal. You can get a 14" drop on a NEW Pete. Having said that........we all know the "drop" doesn't literally cover 14" of glass......it depends on the angle combined with the drop.

The rulings referenced above seem to indicate items mounted ON the glass (transponders, etc.) so if some eager cops are using this for things outside, mounted to the cab.......jeeez what WON'T they try!!!!
