I have see a ramp in Alabama iirc up in the sand mountain area that just ran you off a mountain , I don't even recall it having any gravel, but I promise you it was not built to save the driver. Granted it was probably built years ago, but still there 15 or maybe 29 years ago. I have only watched one truck hit a ramp, it was more or less a modern one on 17 south of flag, I would imagine it had over a foot of pea gravel to stop the truck. That gravel looked more or less like he hit water or a large snow drift, as a wall of it hit his windshield.
I know of at least one driver of a crane truck that did get killed in Idaho a few years ago when he took one, I also knew the guy that bought it for salvage, I do not know how, but there was even gravel inside the rear ends.
You want to keep your rig under control, a ramp is built to save the public, not the out of control driver.
I

The ramp is just the first part of a 2 part process. The 2nd part is the trip to Walmart to buy a new pair of underwear!
Gearjammin' Penguin Thanks this. -
Ok... I have read some points in this thread and I want to learn.
What are these hills/mountains looking like that are causing brakes to fade... and once you are in the proper gear what do you do to control it? -
If I need to I’ll use the service brake in short bursts like I was taught. I probably go down the mountain “too slow” but atleast I make it down in one pieceFarmerbob1 Thanks this. -

There are no 9% grades on any interstate, I'm not sure there are any 8% ones, most interstate grades are 6% or less,,now some of the back roads have them and more.
