I'm sure at least a few of you will say your dad or uncle or brothers or someone drove in your family or a close friend... I wouldn't mind hearing some stories about the journey to getting a Class A CDL without trucking school. What type of hands-on or on the job training you had, things of that nature. Thanks in advance!

Prime and a few other companies will train you from scratch to get your CDL - no formal trucking schooling involved.
    Advantage: low to no cost.
Disadvantage: you learn it "their way", which could mean - if it's not thorough - your skills won't translate well to other companies.

It's hard buddy. Undoubtedly will test you through n through.

I did it though. The biggest issue you'll have is finding an outfit that will let you train on their trucks, you'll never make it unless you get the hands on experience. Look into dairies, or farming operations.

    Badmon Thanks this.

I thought the FMCSA made school mandatory after Jan 1 of this year

Years and years ago, I got mine with no school whatsoever. Had a job working for a large municipality in south FL; applied for a promotion and got it, with the stipulation I get my CDL B within six months. Turns out the city had 2 state certified examiners that were employees, so I got my permit (they said as long as you're doing it, why not go class A) and got about 3 months experience running live bottoms/walking floors with refuse from transfer station to the county landfill. The pretrip and road test took all of maybe 15 minutes and I was good to go.

The roads have never been the same since......o_O

I'd read it here too, but never did find any links on it.

    *edit

I think it was a proposal. Just like the interstate age going from 21 to 18
