Anyone know anything about Stevens Transport?

    to be clear, all stevens trucks now have 8 speed trannys, and yes I average monthly 7.2 mpg without an apu, hauling gross weight of 75 to 80,000 each and every load. It is about how one shifts, we have Cats, so the shift points are much lower than with a cummins, 1000 rpm for low range, 1200 for high range. Slow acceleration also helps to save on fuel. Let the torque and turbo pull you up to speed. I run all 48, from west to east coast, for this month, dead head miles of 1160, loaded miles of 11731, so 9.8% empty. 10% dead head is average for me, and I keep my out of route miles down to 4%, and Stevens' pays shortest miles (HHMG).

    11731 + 1160 + 501 = 13392 / 1852 gallons of fuel = 7.23 mpg for the month. Stevens says I am getting 6.96 mpg because they do not count unpaid miles into their calculation. Just another way to not pay the fuel bonus to a company driver, which I am not.

    Every company is different, trucks are speced different, and each driver will drive differently. I do what is comfortable for me, and makes me profitable, while it may not work for you.

    fueltank, you need to do your own research I looked for 4 months before I chose Stevens.You are going to hear both good and bad on all companys but what I thought was very important to me was how Stevens puts a high value on safety.

    I remember 2 short years ago when I started driving people where saying stay away from reefers grocery warehouses are a night mare blah blah blah. I am going skateboarding it will give me an opportunity to exercise blah blah blah. Flatbeds haul mostly building material do the math, Stevens doesn't look so bad now a days

    I would strongly suggest that if one wants to become a driver then they are going to have to put up with lots of bull from the very beginning. There's no central control of what OTR companies due to hopeful trainees or use them even more pay them. If this is your dream and you really want to achieve this dream. Then go for it. But you were warned about how they treat truckers from the very beginning.

    In comparison it's alot like the military. Your recruiter is going to tell you the good things. The money is good, thehometime is good, blah.. blah.. blah.. That's the hook.. When in reality they can't promise you this and you'll learn from experience.. The sinker.. As with all jobs in life. You make do with what you have. The living is good but not perfect. You can support your family but not over support them. To me the hard part when starting out is finding that semi right company. The first year is the toughest. It's your introduction into the world of trucker. That's whne you findout how really bad you want it. From the company to the trainers you're going to have to put up with the good and bad.

    It's just how things are.. No one is going to hold onto your hands and babysit you. I'm sorry to write this, but thats how it is. Life is what you make of it. If you let it defeat you then I don't know what to write you. Look around you, those who make it life have also gone through their personal own tribulations. It's a survival game out there no matter how you put it. If you don't to put up with this, then the company kicks you to the curb. Simple as that, there's always someone to replace you. They know it, so should we. Don't take things personal focus on the right then and now. We need to feed and shelter our families. No doubt, no time to whine and gripe. That doesn't pay the bills and put food in their mouth. See, what I'm saying. Nothing is going to be given to you on a silver platter. You got to get it and move on for you're betterment and that of your family.

    Alot of new drivers want to know who's good and who's bad. Not everyone's experience is going to be the same. Use your brain and judgement when getting your cdl license. Just don't sign any agreement because it sounds good. Ask lots of questions, feel them out. When asking a recruiter questions always get a second opinion from an experienced driver. Call the recruiter back ask him the question again but paraphrase it. Listen to how he or she is going to respond. Listen carefully, if you start getting doubt about what they're saying. Go with your instinct. You to can be choosey which OTR outfit you want to join with. Remember, it's your life we're talking about. You're credit.. You're loan.. Who stands to lose more? You or the OTR company? I think thats what alot of us lose focus on. We want to work to provide for the famly. Why, work for a company that is BS'ing you from the very start. It goes to show you what they're capable of.

    I noticed that the Stevens Transport website is vague to say the least about alot of things such as,
    Hiring Requirements for experienced drivers that are interested in getting hired on.
    How many incidents and violations they allow a driver to get hired on and how many would disqualify a driver from being hired.
    Hiring requirements in genral.
    If there is any diffrence in pay for experienced drivers compaired to newbies that just got done training.
    They dont tell anything about if a driver gets injured on the job.
    They dont tell anything about tolls and if a driver is reinbursed for a toll on a non pre pass road.
    Ive heard alot more good then bad about stevens transport over all, Sure some drivers always have a chip on thier shoulder when it comes to driver treatment and that is just how it is. If you dont do your job right or are late for loads or have a bad attitude/complain all the time and such things can happen and the driver gets the short end of the stick, Its just part of the trucking industry and besides its all in what you make of it:biggrin_25525:.
    Personaly, Ive drove for 2 companies,
    Werner (Witch i really liked, yea the equipment was junk for the most part but no biggie and the shop at the atlanta terminal left alot to be desired. I was always treated well with werner over all though)
    and
    covenant (I diddnt like covenant much exept for my dispatcher witch was the best one ive had yet and gave me good loads when i wanted to run and always had loads lined up for the weekends and the nights that i unloaded early and had time to run! That was pretty much the only good thing about covenant.
    None the less i did my job untill i got fed up with them and went back to werner untill i was injured)
