Is there an online map, like google maps, where you can click on a location (on a road) and see what the percent grade is at that location? I drove today on Park Ave, Laguna Beach with 30,000 lbs of sand and it was a hair raising experience to say the least. I would guess it took 15 minutes to climb to Top of the World, the truck was full throttle the entire way going about 5 mph, maybe 4 mph. I am really glad the truck made it.

I think Google Earth did a while back. Haven't looked at it in years.

Everything on top of that hill probably got there on a truck. If they can do it, you can do it.

Pulled up a topographical map and found the high school is at about 150 foot, the junior High is at about 750.

You climbed about 600 feet in a little over a mile (5280 feet) so an average of about 10% grade.

I think this was even more than 10% grade...maybe 15%...more in some places

I asked about this a few years before I went out West. Mountain Passes Steep Grades - RV Must Haves!
IMO, you only need to read the signs. EVERY steep descent has signs posted well before you begin going downhill. Many of them will even post a reasonable speed for trucks, and some of them have different speeds based on your gross weight. I decided not to spend money for another book of maps because you will seldom have enough time to do the calculations to see if the extra time spent avoiding a steep climb/descent can be made up in other ways. Climbs and descents are a part of trucking and you should learn to go up/down hills safely. As a rule, you should not pass any truck your first time on whatever hill you find yourself unless you are empty and the other truck is heavy. I used this rule in bad weather out West, also. "You can go down a hill too slow many times, but only go down it too fast once."

The city or county was doing some work on a road and needed sand delivered.
