I am not new to trucking. I’ve been doing it for the last 24 years. I’ve been an independent owner operator for the last 20 years. So the last time I was an employee driver was 1999. I was wondering are there any trucking companies now that allow employee drivers to only work when they want to like contractors? I realize it would have to be a slip seating arrangement. And I’m not talking about temp drivers either. I’ve always thought this would be a good way to attract drivers. Has anyone ever heard of this? Back in the day before deregulation this was common practice. Drivers would have to bid on trips and only worked when they wanted to and many times not even then because they did not win the bid.
Schneider has something called part time. You pick when you want to work. You have to go out for at least four days twice a month. You do get benefits. It's available in select locations.
Driver staffing companies are the only way I know to work when you want and be off when you want. They usually take a couple dollars per hour off of the company driver pay where they supply drivers. For example, if the company drivers are getting $20/hr, temp drivers get maybe $16-18 per hour and the rest goes to the staffing company. Even the few companies I've heard of with flexible type of less than full time schedules still expect you to work THAT schedule. I imagine the companies that could afford to give you a Driver's Whim type of schedule would put you in an older, paid for truck.
what he said, ^^^^^^^^^...and i would have said it as well, but you didn't want to hear about temp agencies/staffing agencies, driver leasing companies...
I’m not sure if you could call it working when you want, but Roehl used to advertise 2 weeks on and 1 week off. And Schneider has or had something similar. I think the problem for a lot of drivers would be moving in and out of different trucks all the time.
If you are an OO find a carrier that is not forced dispatch. Simple, One of my old carriers the last I heard was not forced dispatch. Just make some inquiries, you might be surprised!
I actually worked for driver staffing company back in 1996. It worked OK but the pay was too low. I didn’t mind at the time because I was in college. But I think you’re right, That’s about as close as you’re going to get.
