I have the 90 Freightliner cabover you see in the avatar there, and have been having and electrical problem with it for a while now. I have narrowed it down to a short that happened when my A/C compressor locked up. Now in the wiring diagram there is a thing call a SHUNT. What is this thing and where on a cabover with a 350 cummins would it be located. I'm guessing that its down by the motor at the starter. There is a thing there that looks like a ballast resistor, but I am not sure that is what it is. If anyone has been here before and can remember what the deal was would you be so kind as to kinda guide me as to how to fix this dilema. I have to disconnect my batteries every time I shut the truck off.

    Thanks for reading...:biggrin_2553:

hmm--sorry my memory is so bad (but i did enjoy my youth)
i might be getting mixed up with ihc coe-but i remember working on a cab over--and yes by the starter there is---iirc a fusable link--but i would think if that was bad it would be open and you wouldnt get anyvoltage at all
i hope somebody with more knowledge comes along--with a few ideas for you
i will keep thinking and see what i remember--used to work on those evil beasts quite a bit

A shunt is usually employed to protect circuits....so.......

It stands to reason that when your AC locked up the high voltage caused the shunt or fuseable link to open up and save other circuitry.

Without a wiring diagram to look at.......It's just speculation.

The shunt is mounted near the starter, and is used for the ammeter. It also is used as a junction point for wiring. The shunt looks like a kinked foil, about 5 inches long. The AC clutch is powered from the low pressure switch it has a rubber cover and is usually mounted on the AC dryer. The dryer will be mounted behind the right front tire, just disconnect it, or unplug the AC clutch.
Wiggling the shunt around will usually find the short. Beware you can get a big spark.
    Just a thought!

Thank you folks very very much! I was suspicious of that foil lookin thing down by the starter, and was thinking that was it. I'll have to take it off and ohm test it to see if it is bad. Now just so I understand if that goes bad then it will open the circuit, and the A/C locking up could have caused the circuit to open? Just so I'm getting it in my memory for future reference. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
