At one point my husband and I talked about my getting a CDL and us team driving or finding a company that would allow "super single". I had no problem's with that at all. I would be as much of a noob at driving as any other. Even talked to a company that after he worked for them for 6 to 8 months ( with a clean record) would allow him to be my trainer, after CDL school. He's the one that said no, he would rather I sat in the passengers seat, navigate, cook, keep records, deal with customers at both ends and dispatch, than drive.

It doesn't bother me at all. Same with here in the Oil fields, I had gotten a job, decent paying...BUT after his errrr 12 hr shift ( yeah right), he didn't want to come "home" and have to cook for himself. My job interfered with his, his pays better.. ( really I didn't need to get a job).

We never killed each other so's you'd notice.

At first I was leary. I mean it's so noisy out here with the idling, the reefers, the APU's I realized NO ONE would hear me scream. Hubby escorted me a number of times, or would even drive into the fuel lane so I could go pee.

Then I got savvy. Know where the truck is so I can find my way back in the dark. He tries not to park in the very back. Walk deliberately and make eye-contact as I go, so people get the vibe that it's best not to mess with me. Get in and get out, save the "browsing and shopping" for daylight. My shower bag weighs about 40#'s and I know how to swing it.

I just keep the same wits about me as I did in my "shopping mall days". Keys in my hand at the ready for any eyeballs that need to be poked; walk with my head up and a brisk pace.

After all this time in the truck, I'd have to say that most drivers are gentlemen, will make eye-contact and say Hi, How ya doin', and are usually on the same mission I am---potty or food. haha

I feel safer out here than I ever did in a lot of mall parking lots.

My wife rode with me for about 6 weeks as soon as I got done with my month of training and got my own truck. Well, company truck but you know what I mean. I really enjoyed it and it was very relaxing. When you drive solo there is always some time to do stuff together. She now has her CDL and we drive team. We're doing great and making way better money than I ever could solo but there is very little time to relax
Either driving or sleeping most of the time. If it wasn't for the money I'd prefer solo loads for sure! lol

Good for her for getting her CDL. I won't get one...love to drive, but I'd rather drive a car or pickup for work if there is money in doing that.
I'm glad that doubling up has worked for the two of you. I find that very romantic.

Unless your committed to a team contract, wouldn't you be able to find a nice hotel for a few days once a month...or...always do your 34 restart in a hotel?

You do know what they say about all work and no play? Food for thought coming your way. :)

    @Dennisroc

Their were very few times I felt unsafe at T/S's or rest area's. The places I did feel unsafe, I probably would have felt the same way had I been a man. Does anyone feel really safe in West Memphis? The few places I was hesitant of my husband walked me to the T/S.
I take the same precautions here walking in the morning/evening as I did then, with the exception that I now carry a gun... and it isn't assault from a man I carry the gun for.
At some of the larger T/S's my husband said he could tell I was coming from comments made over the CB. I cannot help the way I am built, but I am dang proud of keeping my figure. ( I dress modestly thank you)

But to put it this way, IF ( god forbid) something happens to my husband, my choice in carrier will be to get a CDL and drive, hopefully I would be able to find a job here, but I only say that because of my dog's.... I don't think I could lift Daddies Precious Angel ( aka Fat stuff ) up into the cab of a semi... she's an English bulldog. The other two we had in a semi, they were raised in it. I would feel perfectly safe OTR, I would just adjust my schedule from what he liked to drive.

We have stopped in rest parks and T/S in our car over the years at all times of day and night and always felt safe but you never know what kind of crazy people you will meet along the way.
I guess always keep an eye out for anything that don't look safe. We had stopped at a few rest parks that were a little dark or unsafe looking but maybe that was just me thinking about her safety but all was well.

The crazies are everywhere, not just Rest areas and T/S's. Anyplace open in the middle of the night tends to draw in the nutcases.
