You are in a tough area to get a decent rate. This time of year, brokers don't need to negotiate as much due to most taking anything they can get on the truck to keep moving. Depending on the load, there is still negotiating room for most loads. But, right now there is an over capacity of trucks. It takes a lot of effort to keep trucks moving with decent rates. By the way, I have gotten plastic pipe south of Amarillo. The rate wasn't great, but was acceptable at the time. I usually keep out of the bad freight area unless I can get a high enough rate where I can afford to deadhead out. I have also been successful at finding LTL freight out of bad freight areas in order to get a decent rate on the truck.
Anyone out there 100% independent and use a dispatch type service?

Sounds interesting but I don't like the:
Bridges Logistics Limited Power of Attorney
...agreement. I have a few problems with granting anyone or anything PoA on my operation or company.
I had a factor company that tried that and I refused, so I didnt do business with them. Perhaps your agreement is industry standard but so far I have not had any reason to sign a PoA in anyone I do business with or for........so I can't see any reason me to start this practice.

Doing that right out the gates with an owner you've never worked with and don't even know... ...that is a huge leap of faith for the owner. I don't even know that I could give that power to people I work with often who know very well the types of freight and hauls I prefer to haul, but then, I never have any trouble finding loads by my lonesome either.
Hanadarko Thanks this. -
Again, maybe it's all fine and normal....but its one red flag and that's all I need to see...
I basically have issues with items 1,2,3,4...

The trouble I see with dispatch services is deadhead means nothing to them. They're not in the truck they're only looking at delivery pickup locations and drops without much thought as to what's inbetween other than maybe general vague "we'll try to have you deadhead less than 100 miles or whatever". If I had a disptach service dispatching my truck and all I ever saw was the shortest deadhead possible I would really be asking myself how good are these people if they can;t look past a limited area and see freight that might be even better that's 300-400 miles out. Do you get rates good enough to justify deadhead like that from time to time? Really all a potential customer has to go on is your word with that one. An owner who really keeps close tabs on what they're doing knows exactly what they can and cant do in any situation, never has vague ideas about deadhead, what works wwhat doesn't, etc.. This is why when you call a company like Landstar or Mercer and ask what their contractors are averaging they don;t have a clue and tell you nothing... ...because the only ones who know are the operators who keep up with the numbers. Unless you have load sheets on what your contractors are doing showing empty miles on every load, really all you have to go on is what your loaded miles rate is. Not to knock you or any dispatch service but really you are out of touch and dont know what you dont know. No-one will ever work harder than #1 at finding profitable loads for the truck, that is a fact... There's no-one else to blame you either find them or you don't.

If a person's not a skeptic about all things presented as the latest greatest in this work they're a sucker. So what is the average rpm to the truck for your dry vans including deadhead?
-
No offense and with all due respect, seriously - $1.60 a mile is a great rate?
Really?
I won't run freight for $1.60/mile....someone else can. -
Your talkin to two different guys in this thread. Keep that in mind.
I know exactly what my cost to run per mile is. Not a doubt at all.
Dead head does fluctuate but I consider the amount of DH I have to do prior to accepting the load and as long
as the numbers STILL work for me, then DH isn't that big of a deal.
The higher the rate, the more tolerable some DH becomes.
