i've been looking for a cheaper way to replace my turbo.
junk yards have a price of $1200. there's a websight that sells refurb for $2000. brand new from kenworth is $3000. cummins wants $3500.
i see sights that will either rebuild the turbo or you can buy the kits. but only one looks like it might be able to rebuild it. at a cost of $350.
the truck has had a few bucks spent as of late. so right now replacing the turbo isn't financially possible till the truck gets off it's butt and goes back to work. but i've al;so gotten to the point of being tired of the smoke.
somehow though. i really don't see the turbo actually fixing the smoke. since the turbo has apparently been bad for quite some time.
i've been in the truck almost a year now. and power has not diminished one little bit. so even if i had the money. i'm a little leary about spending that kind of dough and not have the problem solved.
thus another reason to try to get a working turbo as cheap as possible.
so, has anyone rebuilt there turbo. or have other ideas. or is it basically just cough up the dough and hope for the best.
anyone out there that has rebuilt there turbo???

What kind of turbo are you talking about ?

This probably should be over in the garage section, I'm not sure about the Holset turbo but I've changed the cartridge on Cat turbos before. Google "Borg/Warner turbos for sale" and see what you get, they are great turbos and alot cheaper than Cat and maybe Cummins, alot of the sights will have a crossover and price chart, also Truck Pro sells them if you have one in your area.

Snowwy,take off both tubes off the turbo.
Air intake+exhaust.
See if there is oildeposits in either.
Then check the vanes,see if they are pitted or cracked.
If both answers are negative,most likely the turbo isn't dead yet.
If you see oil deposits....................your aircooler will need cleaning at best and replacing in the worst scenario.
You do realise that a turbo has had it's best around 500 000miles?
That's the longest i use them and i replace them by original part only.(as with most things in life.........you get the quality you pay for)

the turbo isn't dead yet. i haven't lost any power in 120k miles. there's still a pull when your speedling along and hit a slight climb.
it's apparently a slow death as now i'm getting puffs of black smoke.
last week i was climbing a short hill though. and right at the top. power dropped to almost nothing.
and once in awhile the tach maxs out at 1700. shift gears and then it goes up to 2000. -
The company truck I am driving is doing the same thing, same engine you have there. The turbo was replaced with a factory new one about 125000 miles back. Only 620,000 on the truck now.
The mechanics at our shop think its an EGR problem, but they wont replace it yet. Its kinda strange, runs great, except sometimes in a pull it will puff that smoke. It still getting 6.9 to 7.1 mpg pulling 50,000 lbs of fuel on a tanker. -
the turbo has holsey stamped on it. but google only pulls up holset.

It just means that the vanes(or wings or ribs) on the turbo are still intact.
So it will keep spining as usual.
The bigger danger is if it is leaking oil in your air intake.
