How about taking US 81 and making a left on I-90. Little or no civilization. :)

US26 is a great road. Taken it many times on loads going to the northwest from central/southcentral US. A few stops. Scale in Torrington, WY is always open (as are most WY scales). Scottsbluff is the biggest town you'll hit, and the road runs to the north with only a few lights. In fact, Torrington seems to have more just because you're going straight thru that town.

Torrington closes at night nowadays, as do Lusk and US85 Cheyenne. Only the 5 interstate ports (Evanston, Cheyenne, Burns, Sheridan, and Sundance) and Kemmerer (US30) are 24 hours. (Not sure about Alpine, had been over there at night in forever...)

That's cool. Lusk always closed, but wasn't really a 'border' scale in the sense that Torrington was. They just completely rebuilt the Torrington scale too, very nice. No more 'two sides fighting for one scale' like Clayton NM's scale on US87 or the one on US54 near Texas.

Actually because of budget problems only Sheridan, Burns, And Cheyenne are 24 hours the rest of them close at from 2 to 6 am.

Well I ran across 26 and the road was great. Then got into 25 and all was good till I turned north of Casper, then the 50mph head wind came on and around 40 miles south of Buffalo the snow started flying. Other than that, it's been a good trip.

And the POE at the WY line on 26 decided to do an inspection on my truck due tithe Hazmat and temporary tag I have. But I passed and got my smiley sticker lol

I used to run up that way to Cody Wy quite often. Sometimes I would run 26 or 25 just which ever I was in the mood for. Since you said you would be heavy the wind shouldn't be that much of an issue. Just be sure to have plenty of fuel and supplies because you do not want to break down up there as you will go for miles and miles without seeing anything but tumble weeds. I was on 25 going north once and passed a two car wreck that had just occurred and it was 45 minutes when I passed an ambulance going south towards the wreck. Things are just so spread out. Hey the north gate travel plaza at exit 86 in Casper is a good truck stop to stop at. The restaurant is good and they also have a bar. Plenty of parking too.

Well the wind would not have been a factor if it wasn't head on, but of course it was. My boost gauge never dropped off 31psi the whole way from Casper to Buffalo.

I'm holed up here in Buffalo for the night riding out the snow. I'll hea into Billings in the morning when it's all gone. They are calling for upper 50's by Thursday too lol !!!
