I have looked at over 50 trucks the last two weeks, and the best bang for the buck I have found is a 06 Century from large NC fleet.
Good maintence dept and has a C-13.
Spoke with one of there drivers after looking the truck over and he said they were a little on the weak side.
He drove teams to ID and were grossed out, out and back.
I do not know aything about the C-13 and my search feature does not seem to be working tonight.
Price includes 24/200 I will call it power train warn, and 12/100 mile warn that covers turbo, injectors, water pupms and such.
Truck has 10 spd man, around 550K miles.
Any input will be greatly appriciated.
Anyone running C-13??

The C13 I had in my 2005 Pete 387 was ok. It was on the higher hp end of the C13's tho at 470hp. It did use quote a bit of oil tho, but was told they all did this???
I heard thatthe pre-emissions C13 is one of the better motors CAT produced buy can't tell ya if it's true. -
I ran a C-13 just recently when I worked for Caledonia Haulers it was a gutless POS, I think they had them set at 435hp though..

Got one in an '04 T800 daycab, runs great. Has just under 800k and is starting to use a lot of oil and has a good amount of blow by. Got a great deal on an '06 take out C13 and is being rebuilt as I type this. Going to drop it in the '04 in a few weeks with a PDI stage 1 tune, would buy another truck with a C13 if the deal was right.
This truck pulls a grain hopper and is loaded to 80k+ on every load. -
Thanks guys,
I was afraid of that.
There are very few decent trucks out there on the used market right now.
Prices are 10k to 15k higher than this time 10 12 montha ago.
Over the last month the Freightliner market has went up 2k-4k ove the last 4 weeks.
on fleet trucks.
Wal-Mart 9400's are going for 30K at auction, it is getting crazy.
Thanks once again. -
I have a European Emission file that is 500 Hp and 1750 Ft-Lbs of torque for a serial number prefix KCB C13 Acert. With the FLS /FTS changes the engine will produce roughly another 25 hp
I had a customers with this modifications and they're very happy with the way they run afterwards. The claimed they increased fuel mileage roughly .4-.5 mpg over the stock 470 Hp setting in the ECM.
You can also do a PDI Stage 1 tune, PDI has two different Stage 1 tunes for these engines and both of them will out pull a C15 550 hp truck at anytime. The PDI tunes can be hidden in the ECM, so your CATERPILLAR engine warranty will not be effected
Getting one of these engines to run isn't a problemSHC Thanks this. -
Ya'll should have been runnin trucks when the average company hp was 300-350 hp.
You'd appreciate those "puny" 435's.SHC Thanks this. -
I assume you are looking at an old Cargo truck. You can call them about reliability, or give MDI a call, as both run them. They had some thrust bearing failures with the earlier ones (2004 models) I suppose that problem is fixed by now. MDI had their's set at 450 HP, and they ran pretty good. Their engines were set for progressive shifting and very slow fuel pedal response, but they pulled decent for how they were set.
Cargo sets theirs pretty much the same way. You would want to change a few things in the ECM to get the potential out of the engine.
I would give MDI and Cargo a call. The guys in the shop are ok.
You can also call Cat with the engine serial number and you can get the whole history of anything they did to the engine. -
i have a columbia with c 13,runs nice with mr.haneys europeanfile update,my mpg from heavy 5.7 to light 7.8 mpg ,1 Gallon oil in 50 k.iam very happy with this engine
SHC Thanks this. -
