High heat from combustion can break down oil properties. Yet some people go 100 k running a bypass filter.

And would these breakdown properties show up in an oil sample?

    KB3MMX and 77fib77 Thank this.

Oil looses additives over time. Breakdown is not such a concern. TBN will stay good longer than additive package. Im not sure how to put additives in oil. Unless you run for near 50,000 and just add a gallon.

Anyone use a pre oiler pump?

Easy enough to fig up in the system , since 90 percent of your wear is that first couple seconds on startup.

Idk. I remember my high school shop teacher telling us the molecules get cleaved by combustion . Which leads to changing of the protection property of oil.

Then here we have guys going 80k full synthetic with a bypass filter and oil testing.

    Oldironfan Thanks this.

    Your shop teacher!!!!
Come on man.... Under normal operating conditions oil doesn't go bad, it does however get dirty and/or contaminated and gets acidic.
With good filtration we can eliminate the dirt (silicate) and a proper maintained/running engine we don't see much contamination. Most engines burn enough oil that base is kept up by the make up fresh oil... However, they do sell filters with additional base additives or as many do they just drain a gallon or two and add fresh.
Cummins has a fairly new OilGuard program that allows for 80 or 90k intervals, with sampling.
I know a guy who's got 1.4 million on 12.7 Detroit and has only changed the oil 5 times...no inframe. He does change his filters every 30k and runs a bypass filter.
My 14L goes 60k between intervals, has since 500k. I also change the full flows at 30k and bypass at 60k....1.3 million no inframe. (Rods and main bearings at 900k)
I get it that people don't like extended intervals, but oil samples don't lie and will tell you when you need to change your oil. I'm a perfect example, read and studied this stuff yet I still dump my oil at 60k when it looks good still.

    KB3MMX Thanks this.

Just make sure you use the recommended
    10-30 synthetic blend. Good luck.

    KB3MMX Thanks this.
