I got my cdl testing on a stick. When i got my first driving job i was assigned a trainer with an automatic for 5 weeks. After that went solo and was also assigned my own automatic truck. After 3 months i got a call from my company offering me a great local opportunity due to my saftey and performance. I took it. First day as a local driver i was assigned a 10 speed stick and it was the worst and longest day of my life. I had to re-learn how to drive stick while loaded and thru city conditions by myself.

Now when i hit steep grades going up hill........

Learn to drive stick man. It will come back to haunt you later on if you dont. Trust me

@RYITO1122334455 I see this thread is a couple years old... are you actively and seriously looking to get into Trucking?

I had the opposite experience to the post above... I took my tests in a manual truck and did well enough to pass... but the first company that I drove for had a fleet of autos.... I loved it... honestly, at this point, I would not even consider driving for a company that didn’t have Autos.

So don’t sweat the manual vs auto debate... drive what you like and like what you drive... there are options out there for both kinds of Drivers.

Yes, there is the aurgument that you will be limiting your self for job options out in the field but I think that has actually reversed over the last few years... now companies are limiting their potential work force if they don’t offer autos... I think a few brands (ie Volvo) are even standardizing around autos so that if a company wants a manual it’s a “Special Order”...

So don’t get hung up on Manual Vs Auto, besides, in a few years we will all be fending off the “Driverless Trucks” and this debate will be moot.

That is probably an indicator of fewer problems and lower cost of maintaining.

I'm sure Chinatown will be here with a list sometime but basically all the companies that train you for a CDL are going to have autos. Most are all auto fleets.
