Yeah, the damper and balancer have nothing to do with mpg. Purely an engine longevity enhancement. The silicone in the damper will harden over time and prevent the damper ring inside from moving. Bruce at PP recommends changing a damper no later than 500,000. My Detroit Series 60 manual says the same thing. Without actually cutting open the damper, one has no way to know if it is bad or not. And since it really just sits there on the front of the engine and is easily unnoticed, It is an commonly overlooked item, unless a total out of frame rebuild is being done. One has to wonder, how many times internal engine damage could have been avoided if more folks would change the damper more often. It is sure a lot cheaper than a new crank. If there was any argument for something just being cheap insurance, it would be for changing the damper at a reasonable time frame. Especially when it is simply a bolt on product. No opening of an engine required.
Anyone use pittsburgh power crank balancer on c15

My truck with a 3406E Cat was eating up motor mounts until I installed the PP damper and balancer. I highly recommend both if you want to smooth the motor out.
I can set a cup of water on my dash while idling and don't have to worry about it vibrating off.
FYI. As mentioned earlier, the damper needs replacing around every 500,000 miles due to silicone drying out inside.CellNet Thanks this. -
Strange you mentioned the motor mounts cause I recently just had to replaced those and cab mounts.

It didn't have anything to do with having 1.7 million miles on the mounts.

The damper and balancer is the same thing.........right?

If I'm not mistaken only on company makes a balancer. they have a deal with PP and all of them are bought through PPs account no matter where you buy it.Dorsey Thanks this. -
There is after market dampners. Several actually
PP recommends the vibratech which is what I purchased and you can purchase it thru the manufacture directly or Iowa 80 or PP and few other places.
Balancer also can be purchased at different dealers which that manufacture is Centralmactics -
I did not mean that the damper was only available through the factory but that it was a factory installed part. Vibratech makes aftermarket dampers for big trucks there may be others.
I don't think cetramatics makes balancers for engines, for wheels only. Balance Master makes them for engines. They use a the mercury filled ring. I am pretty sure that they have deal with PP. If you buy from Iowa 80 or another place like them the balancer still goes through PP.
