hubby ran mail for 3 years too...... we both used to fill up 2 ,53' trailers during the course of the day with LTL pickups (with that LTL job)....1, 2 pallets at a time.....also i used to shuttle trailers.....and hubby used to yard dog....and he didnt have a switcher truck, he had an old ford with a DT466 with a 10 speed day cab.......lol had to get out and roll down the landing gear on every trailer he moved...
not trying to argue....if you think automatice are your best choice, thats cool......for us, we prefer a manual....regardless of what job it is....
Anyone will try automatic transmission as a new truck driver straight from school?

you are right...it is preference....not ego in our case...just didnt used to have automatics when we started driving.... -
I would rather drive a manual shift over automatic transmission.
Manual shift gives you more control.
As to a new truck with automatic transmission.
I did have a Volvo automatic transmission "I shift" out for a spin one time.
Never again.
I was the Harded shifting transmission I ever drove, It would give ya wip lash when upshifting.
Down shifting did not happen at all if the Jack/engine break was not engaged.
I figed between wip lash and wearing out the breaks faster was not a good investment at all.
But they say that the fuel saving is worth the money.
Not sure about that. What do you think??? -
Also, if you want to drive for the Post Office you have no choice. Every truck they have is a automatic. -
I drove a '12 Mack CXU with an M-Drive (same as the I-drive) for a week in the Mtn's of Colorado. Not a single problem, took me maybe 2 days to get the hang of it and I was good to go. Wish I could have had more time with it to work out it's quirks. -
M915A4 Thanks this.

I have a friend that drove on on on trip and he hated it for the hill said it wouldnt down shift soon enough on hills and would jerk him arond with more than 30000 in the box its not for me I prefer a 13 speed

I keep hearing drivers talk about jerking, I'm starting to think it's them jerking everyone's chain. I've driven autoshifts for 12 yrs and never felt jerkiness unless I'm doing something wrong or there is a problem with the trans. I've driven two seperate two peddal auto's for a week each, with heavy loads, and never had this problem either. -
Im hoping I just sold my truck and going back to company for a while and just found out 80 percent of there trucks have automatic there older 9200 cornbinders

Then I hit the breaks and it barely slowed down. Put the jake on and let go the fuel and then it slowed down faster with out the break. Must have been a lemon.
