Let me first say this forum is great...I happened upon it while my son and I were researching CDL schools. There is a lot of great info here, but I was wondering if there is any person that would be open to starting a kind of mentoring relationship with my son. I want to ensure that we choose the right school (we called Roadmaster and I was not pleased) and gets placed with a respectful and responsible company. I figured this would be not be labor intensive but maybe consist of a few phone calls a week at the start and less contact once he gets more comfortable.

There is soooo much to learn...who new driving a truck required so much thought and planning. Before today I never knew meals/cooking/storing food was something truckers had to put a lot of thought into....or types of refrigerators/freezers......:biggrin_2551: ahhhhhhh!!!

Anyway, he is located in Tampa, Florida, age 20 (will be 21 in November) and is going to start his own account on this forum today. Thanks to everyone for their post and also to anyone who considers my request!

Thanks Wargames....he hasn't set up his account yet, he will do so a bit later today!

I meant to add that he is age 20 (21 in November)....hence why I am trying to find him a mentor.

I'll help as much as I can. Might be good to have a few mentors as everyone has a different view and opinion of the industry. I can only speak from my own experiences which haven't been bad. Compared to some of the things I read here I have had a great career in trucking. Best of luck!

If he's just turning 21 make sure you find a decent company that will accept him at that age. Most companies won't hire until 23. If he doesn't find one that will take him at 21 he could be sitting awhile and have to do it all over again. Have a plan in advance.

I too can help him, I too am busy, But tell him to reach as many of us as he needs to. Also he can certainly read all there is here, I would start in the New Drivers threads.

This is good advice as well.

There are lots and lots of good folks here on this forum. I have only been on here for a little while but I have learn more then I ever would have thought of, I came here looking for some information on a truck and have learned so very much more. Thank You.

one thing let him know NOT to get upset, frustrated, because trucking can do this too someone. he is going too hear don`t do it, and some will say they just love it. it`s just a preference thing each driver has experienced . it will take him quiet a while to fully understand the world of trucking. Now for my personal opinion seek a job with UPS. it`s a long road but well worth it. get him a job there as a loader on the dock. i can tell you this, it might take 10 years at UPS , but when he starts driving for them, his income could be $100k plus .

Keep in mid that United Parcel Service, (UPS), workers are represented by the Teamsters union. Union shops are very much seniority based. If there are no openings at UPS in Tampa Florida, be sure to check other areas of Florida as Miami, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Pensacola, Orlando, etc..

    Good luck to you.

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

Thanks , I know all about UPS, Have many friends driving for them, Also, I have just a few years driving myself. There Union and a good one at that. He will start as a loader for about 10 plus years before he can have his own run. At his age, its perfect.
