Well I finally made the first step towards a change in career today. I applied to Millis. I have been researching in great depth the past few months and had it narrowed down between Millis and Roehl. I finally decided to apply with Millis! One of the main reasons is it's a smaller more family oriented company. I have been working for a big corporation the past nearly 5 years and want to get a little farther away from that culture and into something smaller. Millis seems to be a perfect fit for what I am looking for, the smaller family company with a training school! Perfect! And I haven't read a single thing bad about this company.

I am slightly worried about one thing however, I am not sure how many weeks I will go without a paycheck once I start the training. Anyone know this?? I know the first 3 weeks for sure is no pay. How soon after this 3 weeks do you finally get your first check? Do they hold a week once you start earning an income? I am trying to set my family and I up to have no issues financially while I transition into this new career, as I am the sole income provider for us. Any info/help would be greatly appreciated by anyone who went through the program recently. In my application I put available date as early September to give myself enough time to secure financial things at home before the switch.

I also am curious to see if a accident I was involved in will affect me getting offered a position. I was involved in a NO Fault of myself accident, where a lady turned right in front of me onto the side street. She took full responsibilty, she was on her phone with the sun in her eyes and didn't see me. It was a very low speed accident, less than 30 mph. I also have the police report to show where I was found at no fault at all. I drive a company vehicle for my current job and had to supply this to them and I was not issued any points for the accident. Anyone have any insight on this kind of situation? Other than that I have a clean record for at least the past 7 years with no violations. Had a few when I was much younger that wouldn't even show up on my record anymore.

I'm excited and hopeful that I could become a part of the Millis team and hope to keep posting more as the days go by!

Just depends on the company. Some will pay you although not alot while you are training on the road, and then there are some that offer a sign on bonus. Im in the same boat and am leaning toward schnieder for these points.

From what I learned, you will start receiving pay after school during your training on the road to the tune of $500 per week.

Ahh ok thanks for the info. So it would just be a matter of when you get out with your trainer. Could possibly wait a few days or week even depending on when they could pick you up. So I think I should probably count on 4 weeks of no pay from the time my last day with my current employer to receiving a first check once training. Unless they do like Roehl does and hold a first check for whatever reason, than it would be at least 5 weeks, geesh that's a long time not to bring any gravy home lol

Yes it is, not the easiest decision to make. But from talking to other truckers can be worth it as long as you make it count.

Just keep your eye on the big picture. From my angle, Millis is in the top 10% of OTR companies to work for. Drivers get along, they have very low turnover, equipment is good, good employment package. They really know how to run a trucking company looking at the big picture and long term. IMHO.

yeah when you get out with a trainer you have to drive at least 4 hours a day to count as a day of work. when you get to 7 days of days that counted your trainer will submit it for you to get paid. depending on what day of the week it is will depend on when you get paid. time has to be submitted by monday at midnight then you get mo.ey on your comdata card if you chose that option on friday the rest will go into your bank on the next tuesday. and no they dont hold a check. only bad thing is if you get stucj somewhere and dont drive then you dont get credit for that day. or if you or your trainer go home you dont get credit. also 34 hour resets dont count. i got my first check then didnt get paid for the next 2 checks due to home time and a couple of long waits for loading or unloading but then i got my following 2 cgecks. so just keep that in mind. hope this helps.

Yeah Samurai, it's a little rough the first few weeks. Especially when a guy has a family to support. Sometimes money just seems to evaporate. Just gotta get through it. Gotta look at it as an investment.

Well I am a little bummed that I didn't hear back from them today, just hoping they are a little over busy after last week's holiday week and will get back to me soon. If not I will call for a follow up to make sure they received my app.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like training pay is more or less a pro rated per day pay not a flat 500,550, 600 per week than if I understand correctly? Meaning the first week to get a full 500 a person needs to drive 4 hours per day all seven days? I know once I am out with a trainer I'd be pushing to drive as much as I can to soak up the experience of having someone with with far more experience and knowledge than myself. So I'd hope I be able to do this, minus the resets etc.

Well hopefully they will get back to me soon, I did put on there my available date would be early september, so I may not be on the top of the list right now to call back. I just want to give myself a good couple more months to sure up financial things before giving a notice at my current job.

Don't worry about it. They take 48 hrs. minimum to respond. They are very busy right now. Call them anytime to get a status. They are all very nice people and will happily answer any questions you have.
