I am trying to help a friend find out about a trucking school/career. He has some criminal background issues and I am trying to find out if he can even qualify. He is 42. He had a felony 23 years ago and more recently a misdemeanor (not driving related) for which he will be on probation until Sept 2010. He talked with one school and was told he would have to be five years out from his probation before a company would even touch him for insurance reasons. Just trying to find out if all this is accurate or just one person's opinion. His driving record is clean. Also, if he can qualify with his history, can anyone recommend a school with free training, etc that might be willing to take him. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It would be a waste of time pretty much.. no company will touch him.. being on probation.. an it would be a good 5-7 years after he is off.. before they would even look at him.. but this is just IMHO .. BUt pretty sure it is correct opinion.. sorry

Have him call and talk to recruiters at some of the big training carriers like Swift, Werner, Central Refrigerated etc......
Best to get the info straight from the horses mouth - so to speak.
............. JimThe Challenger Thanks this. -
The big boys or Oil field. I know right now BJ Services and Schlumber J are desperate in ND, typically you sign a 1 year to them, they cover school and would know about legal problems, at least they would find out for you. The work is cold, you get 15 days on and 7-8 home, they typically pay for transportation to and from. I got .55 per mile to get there and back, total of 1400 miles round trip about $770 to get to and from home. They cover hotel and 35% of my pay was per diem = tax free. Good deal, but to far from small kids. But you are home more than typical OTR driver

Would you have any contact information for either of those companies? Thanks!

Strada,
I believe he is talking about Schlumberger: http://www.slb.com/
I don't see anything about drivers on their site, but you can email them. Or Google Schlumberger Jobs.
You can also Google BJ Services Jobs.
The internet is a wonderful source of info, if you just use it.

bikerchick1,
If you look long and hard enough, you will find a school that will take his money and let him enroll. But even if he gets his Class A he is gonna have a tough time getting hired. Remember that these school recruiters are just "salespeople" and they make their living getting folks enrolled in the classes. They don't give a right rip about whether the person will ever be hired or not.
I haven't renewed my HAZMAT endorsement, as I am now retired. But I really wonder if he will be granted the endorsement with his record. I understand there are a bunch of hoops to jump through with this now. I'm sure that someone who is currently endorsed can spell it out a bit better for you. -
I just went through the process and I currently work for BJ Services. To get Haz Mat which you have to get to work for BJ you CAN NOT be a felon what so ever. Unfortunately and i do hate to be the bearer of bad news but I know for a fact you can't get Haz Mat and BJ will not look at you what so ever if you have any type of felony nor anything at all on your mvr.
