So, I have my appointment tomorrow at Diesel Driving Academy here in Shreveport. Anything in particular I need to ask about? What else should I know?

Just keep in mind that a recruiter's goal and ONLY goal is to get you to take a chair in that class, that is how they get paid. They will tell you everything under the sun that they think you want to hear and they already know what you want to hear. Get all your answers from places like this website when it comes to the real info that you need.

    chompi Thanks this.

wolfy is right! I went for my appointment with NATIONAL TRAINING truck driving school last week, got my "acceptance" letter after filling out the "qualification" application, took that to a State run office called WorkSource WIA, applied for a scholarship, had to jump thru some hoops with the application process, girl from WIA JUST called a few minutes ago..5 days later...I'M APPROVED!
Gotta go to her office to finalize paper work in the morning, I've signed up for driver training class June 23rd!
    YAHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
I first went to ROADMASTER but NATIONAL TRAINING had a lot more trucks and smaller classes!

Good thing is I don't need to sign a contract with anybody! School is paid for so I can go to any trucking company without an employment contract!

    Good Luck!

Thanks guys! My only real concern is finding a way to pay for it. I know they have financial aid but I don't know if it'll be enough. I am that broke!

So why not just go to a company that will train you....then you wont have to pay anything.

The financial aid, I believe, will actually pay for housing/meals or expenses. I didn't need it because my school is 20 miles away, and I didn't "axe" for any more aid.

My advice is to get in touch with WorkSource WIA in your state and find out! I think it's actually a Federal "retraining" program approved since the economy took a nose dive! It's worth a try........and, if you tell your ROADMASTER recruiter you have no money, they will actually help you to get tuition.......because they don't make a dime if you can't get into their school!

ok, here is something else to think about. It happened in my school, that is how I know it happens. The recruiter says everything will be fine, so you go to class and start schooling and everything seems fine. 3 or 4 days in, they start in about how this will be paid for. They start harping you to get a co signer, or find financing. You have the first couple of days invested in, and the school doesnt even know how they are going to get paid yet. I think the rationalization behind this is, you have committed yourself to the time, so they think you will go all out and make sure that you will find a way to get a loan somehow, or a co signer. Out of a class of 45 at my school(Roadmaster) 10 left, they either couldnt get financed or a co signer or didnt qualify for one of the typical loan sharks that the school deals with. Even if the recruiter says everything is ok, dont count on it, you may have to worry about financing the school somehow, especially if you have bad credit.

Thanks bigdipper. The less complicated this can be, the better. I don't want unnecessary headaches.

I would highly recommend company schooling! No money up front, that's a no brainer! Dont' be concerned about the quality of schools. As long as they are accredited you are good to go. The schools are there to just get you your license! They teach you just enough so that you will be prepared to go with a trainer of your chosen company. You are going to learn more on day one with your trainer than the whole three weeks or so of school you went to!

Ya, I know you have to sign a contract with the company for sponsored training but personally I would much rather owe some trucking company money than a bank! If you take out a loan to go to school the bank is going to be on your butt for the duration of the loan! Plus they don't defer payments! When you graduate, you better have a job and be making money, oh yeah and love truck driving until the loan is paid off! It is also a lot more costly to go to a regular truck driving school. Usually around $6000 average. Company schooling is usually around $2500-$3500. Another thing is that you are guaranteed a job when finish, unlike regular schooling. During school you will be pulling your hair out trying to fill out hundreds of apps!

If you are going the regular school route just make sure you have a clean MVR and also clean criminal past. These are really the only things that could effect you. Don't take the recruiters word for it either! Make sure yourself. They will just as soon sign you up for school and take your $6000 even if you do have a bad driving record.

    They get paid commission!

    good luck man.......
