I have one and there is an internal fuel screen and a glow plug in them that should be replaced regularly.
Once last winter in very cold and windy temps I did have the very thin fuel line that feeds it gel, so treating the fuel is very important in cold weather.

You can "fool" the APU into running more often by having something pulling power that pulls the battery down and getting the APU to kick on and recharge the batteries thus stirring the fuel and heating it up a little. You can also do what I did and get some of that water line wrap and insulate the fuel lines.
It got kind of funny in NYC in the winter time with my new truck! When the heater would kick on the Espar would smoke like crazy! This was due to the carbon buildup from the low sulfur fuel. It looked like the truck was on fire from all the smoke untill the Espar heated up.
I had the FDNY called several times from people seeing it start up and made the 911 call! I became friends with several FDNY companies! We got it figured out that if a 911 call came in from any of my 3 favorite overnight parking spots not to roll on it when they were told it was a truck that matched my trucks description. But it's nice to know that you now have some good friends in NYC! From the fire department to the police! It also helped that when I had a small amount of OS&D in frozen foods I would donate them to these guys. -
Better yet , saw 1 in the Port of NJ a few years ago , guy was saying he never used it and was thinking of selling it . A new O/O in the line was interested , they opened the cover and there WAS nothing there

Thanks for all the responses.
In the end my trucker did tell his company that if they didn't fix the heat he'd be at a hotel every non-hometime weekend with them footing the bill. [I think he has a hotel card or something cause he's a trainer].
So they did give him and his trainee a hotel room and sent him to the terminal. The terminal took 2 days to finally say they didn't know how to fix it and sent my trucker to ClimateCab -so that's where he should be right now.
His dispatch said they wouldn't give him work until the thing was fixed, which is good and bad because we do want the heat fixed but who knows how long that will take. This is day 3 of no work while they attempt to fix it.
Friday, when they're first said no to giving him a hotel room, I was fuming and tried to contact OSHA, etc. but no one got back to me that day. I have yet to check my email to see if anyone contacted me during the weekend.
And I agree, a company/person etc. will only treat you as bad as you let them but last winter with so many trips to the terminal and it not being fixed I think he just felt defeated by the end and then spring and summer came and it wasn't an issue but now it's getting cold again and he doesn't want to deal with this another winter so he's putting his foot down a little harder.
And believe me, he does want to get out of where he is but he doesn't want to just take anything, he wants something better, better pay, more local driving and more hometime and that dream job seems to be impossible to find.
As for the APU, it's problem was that it would turn on and only blow cold air. Wouldn't give heat.
