Okay, I just got this from the horse's mouth...Here's the list of states that allow an additional 400 pounds on your drives if you have an APU:
Alaska
Arkansas
Colorado
Connecticut
Georgia
Idaho
Illinois
Indiana
Iowa
Kansas
Maine
Maryland
Michigan
Minnesota
Mississippi
Missouri
Montana
Nebraska
Nevada
New Hampshire
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
North Dakota
Ohio
Oklahoma
Oregon
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
South Dakota
Utah
Vermont
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin
This in no way indicates you are allowed over your registered/permitted gross weight (80K) but be sure to check for any local caveats in these states.
States with this exemption planned for legislation:
Alabama (failed 2009, but will be raised again)
Arizona (pending)
California
Florida (failed 2009, but will be raised again)
New York (rule allows now...legislation is pending)
Texas (legislature meets next 2011)
Wyoming (under rules change by WYDOT but not legislation)
Future effort likely:
Kentucky
North Carolina
Tennessee
Exemption not allowed, no plans to pursue:
Delaware
District of Columbia
Hawaii
Louisiana
Massachusetts
Rhode Island
West Virginia
Y'all know which states to lean on now...If you live in the states that do not allow or in DC, try to start the ball rolling....
