The allowance is for gross weight, 400 pounds or the actual weight of the unit, as certified by the manufacturer in writing. The certification must be carried on the tractor and the unit must be operational. The exemption is for STAA routes only, not all states have adopted the exemption for local routes.

exactly 12400 on the steers is what transam says

Careful!
Not to exceed the tire rating capacity.
My tires are rated 6175 lbs. So the max I can carry is 12,350 on my steers.
Also, not all scale weighmasters are familiar with the exemptions. Best to carry a copy of the reg exemptions with you so you can point it out if need be. -
trans am highlights the section in the regs

If they would spec trucks right, then there would be no need for exemption. The truck I recently ordered is coming in at almost 2000 lb less than my present truck. Aluminum axle housings and wide based alone save more weight than any APU would add.
Meltom Thanks this. -
Can someone post the actual regulation for reference

Cali doesn't allow 400 over for the apu, neither does Tenn.

It was only a request by the FMCSA to the states. You will have to check state by state to see if they approved it.
Here is the list that OOIDA posted.....

I find it ironic, two of the states that whine the most about diesel exhaust, won't give allowances for a unit that cuts diesel exhaust.
bergy Thanks this.
