I'm beginning to think nothing is good for me anymore. It's a wonder I've managed to survive as long as I have. Probably gonna keel over dead any second now.

canning commercially has come a long way, up til the late 70's the side seam of the can was soldered, ayup using very small amounts of lead, but the inside of the can had a sealant to protect the product from the lead. The can companies switched to a welded side seam, and they tried to say the product was lead free, but the FDA could detect very small amounts in products that had grown along roads from the old leaded car gas! Todays cans are made by a different process, and don't even have the side seam.

The salt content is #1. Everyone loads it down thinking it tastes better to increase sales. I avoid commercial canned goods as much as possible. The only thing I buy canned is tomato products and maybe a few other items.
When I was trucking, it was a convenience to have canned goods. But that's typical of the trucker diet, you sacrifice convenience for healthy eating.
Another bad thing about commercially canned goods is they can be stored in a warehouse for a long time. Warehouses have regular pest control. Pesticides have been found on the outsides of cans. You open that lid, what's the first thing that happens? It falls down in the juices. I always rinse my cans before opening.
Home canning is a different story, because you control the packaging and you control what goes in it. I envy my neighbor. He has a huge garden and he has fresh vegetables all summer and his wife cans most of the rest for the winter. He raises cows, chickens and pigs. His grocery bill is near zero.
I've hauled alot of Hormel inbound and outbound loads at the Spam plant in Austin, MN. Actually the only thing wrong withis the high fat and sodium content. I use to enjoyed a good fried spam and egg sandwich. The doctor says no now.

To paraphrase a Mark Twainism: I've read so much about how things are bad for me, I've decided to do something: give up reading.
