Don't remember, but he was at first blaming it on the trans going into neutral by itself, like it wasn't his choice or idea.
are current production trucks really this badly built?

Temporarily I'm stuck in an almost new t880 autoshift until my truck comes back from repairs. I don't care for it. It shifts constantly often times unproductively. On my way to my 2nd farm I have 41k of milk on board. There is a fairly steep hill. I counted 28 shifts. Absolutely absurd. The stupid thing is dumber then a box of rocks. It has no clue about the grade situation.... It's not a steady hill. It's up a bit... Level out... Up some more kind of deal. I also find not shifting makes the job far more boring. Shifting gives me something to do. How many times I want to grab gears. Bored.
The radio sucks. It shuts off when you back up.... Ok, I think the driver should have control of that but whatever. I guess it's a safety "feature".... What rattles my cage is WHEN I turn it off, backup and the pull ahead the stupid thing turns itself on again. I find this extremely annoying. If I command thy radio to stay off then thy radio needs to stay off until such a time that I command it on.
The autoshift transmission is a headache that isn't aware of the weight I'm pulling or the hills. The boss says put it in manual mode... Well that's just about the dumbest thing I ever heard. Just give me a manual. I'm taking truck 84 back as soon as it returns from kenworth.
Also.... Another autoshift went for repairs the other day truck 82. That makes about 7 trucks for warranty repairs at lower miles. The reliability seems to be poor. Paccar engines and auto shift trans is not ideal. Give me a C15 kitty and a 18 manual any day.

There's a reason they're selling the trucks with used paccar motors for nothing.

They suck with a heavy load. Unless you’re somewhere flatter than glass you can’t keep a steady pace on cruise because of the lag time between shifts. Newer trucks than mine have some programming BS that limit you to 53 mph in 11th gear, so you can’t even lock it in 11th anymore on 55 mph highway and cruise at 1300. These things want you lugging along at 900-1000 rpm, only to downshift again at the slightest incline that a bicyclist wouldn’t even notice, and taking so long to do it that by the time you “let the computer do its thing” you’ve lost 10 mph, more than enough time for the slow idiot in the Subaru or the Prime truck to blow your doors off and park in front of you at far less than you were originally running.
Fast red lights or having to do the tricky maneuvering the LTL guys have to do to shoehorn 48’ trailers into places they weren’t designed to go because of cheap skate idiot internet shoppers have also become quite problematic. You might have to get moving on an instant’s notice to swing out into a lane to get set up to back into somewhere since you just now got the break in traffic you were waiting for, or have been waiting through a long light cycle to make a left turn at an intersection with a short green. You’ll go to take off, but no, this thing isn’t having that. Automatic transmissions move when they feel like it, sometimes 2-4 seconds after you put hammer down.
Another related issue is the lag time between forward and reverse, which is also just wonderful when you have 2 or 3 lanes of traffic blocked while you’re trying to back into a car dealer.
For all the malarkey about computers being God’s gift to all manner of creation and being able to do any and all conceivable things in a nanosecond, I both can AND have worked a manual transmission a hell of a lot faster, more efficiently, and reliably than this newfangled idiot box, and since my previous truck only had ONE clutch replacement in 800,000 miles compared to the usual THREE by then I dare anyone to try and tell me it’s impossible.Dino soar, Dave_in_AZ, 25(2)+2 and 3 others Thank this. -
The used truck market tells the story. 2 makes come to mind. Any Navistar class 8 product with the Navistar engine is almost worthless, and even if they have a Cummins engine they are at the bottom of the heap for resale. The 2nd is anything with a Paccar engine. There are DEEP discounts for that drivetrain with the autoshift, even if it has a manual transmission, they are not faring well in the market place. There is a reason.
