With regards to used trucks. I know with CAT if a truck has had an inframe that inframe is transferable. Of course this is if it was inframed by a CAT shop (Maybe a truck dealer that is an authorized CAT shop it is also transferable?). It will be for the remainder of the warranty and will cost about $500 or so to transfer. If that is a 3 years warranty they might offer you the option to add an extra year to that which again will cost some extra.

My take on adding a 4th year to a CAT warranty... ....keep your money and leave it at 3 years. Mine was inframed by CAT over 4-1/2 years ago and I never had any problems with it warranty or otherwise. I foolishly wasted money on the extra 4th year. If they screwed up the rebuild it will show up sooner rather than later. And a rebuild should be good for much longer than 3 or even 4 years.

My take on transferring the remainder of any engine warranty from the manufacturer on a recent inframe... Do it.... So you have 3 years (or whatever length of the remainder) peace of mind. I would think Cummins, Detroit, and Volvo might offer the same warranties on their rebuilds - or at least similar to what CAT does.

Aftermarket warranties, I wouldn't waste my money on a gimmick like that.

Just in general from working a dealerships that sold these warranties. Most of the aftermarket warranties are not worth the paper they are written on. The factory warranties are a toss up; sometimes they pay off sometimes they don't.

I bought the 4th year of warranty at the the time the inframe was done. It paid back big time.

After about three years, the seal at the front structure started leaking. The entire timing wheels and front cover including rad had to come out.
I assume the repair would have cost me more than $3000. The warranty was $470 if I remember right.

It was on a C13 ACERT.

Forgot to mention: CAT does stick to their warranty. That oil leak was not the only issue. I had the thermostat once and the waterpump twice replaced under warranty.
No questions were ever asked. "You're covered under warranty" was their statement.
As for tranfering the warranty: As far as I know, the warranty is on the engine and it's put on file. Every authorized CAT shop can access the file, no matter who owns the truck/engine.

This 100%. It might be different with a warranty from CAT or Detroit, but the third party warranties are garbage. I speak from personal experience.

On a new truck I would absolutely spend the extra money on every warranty available! Too many of these new emission engines are blowing between 200k and 500k.

On used I would also. I bought a 2008 peterbilt and put a Premium2000 warranty on it. You will read alot of crap talked about premium 2000.

My motor needed rebuilding as it was pushing oil bad out the exhaust, turned out 2 holes needed to be done, at first the warranty company was going to do just the 2 holes and I didn't care. I bought a used truck so that's what I expected but then they decided to do all 6 holes so they wouldn't have to pay all the labor again. I paid for a new head and had a full inframe.

5 months later the transmission went, they covered it all including a new clutch.

Only thing they asked was for my oil change history (which I found funny when my tranny went but oh well)
