Manuals will never be fully replaced.
I myself will die with a manual in my cold hands.
With that said... autos are very good for keeping a percentage of steering wheel holders on the road and making money for one. And ease fatigue when doing battle with gridlock or rush traffic. I liked them. particularly when they are running correctly making shifts when I expect one. -

Just noticed that this thread was from THREE YEARS AGO... ugh...

The one time I tried an auto, an Eaton 3 pedal auto shift back in the 90's, I could set the start gear for takeoff. I wasn't about to start in 1st either. These newest auto shifts are light years ahead of that early Eaton auto shift. There are ways to do things with autos that most folks don't take the time to learn about. There are dozens of parameters that can be set either by the driver on the fly or programming the transmission ECM. Shift points, start gear, etc. Most folks think these things are a one size fits all deal. Not true. Sure, fleets will not think outside the box regarding stuff like this, but a individual owner can do a lot of tweaking to an auto shift and make it fit more of what they like and do.
There will always be a place for the manual. It is not going away. -
