Are manuals basically going away for the automatics?

I am getting a new truck next week, and it's an auto. Really bothering me, I just don't trust it in the mountains. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, but I like to have absolute control of the transmission as I'm always heavy and do alot of mountain driving. However, I can see its awesomeness going through DC Baltimore area traffic, or crashville, or LA, or well you get my drift. But I am worried about the mountains in one. I drove auto one time for about a week and hated it when I was backing. A truck should have a #### stick in it.

The Cascadia w/DT12 I drive will start in 4th Gear.
Also it will skip shift. Not sure about floating though.
Pretty standard stuff really.
Bet all the other Automated Manuals will do the same.Last edited: Apr 29, 2016

Just shows that the debate won't go away any time soon. Lol

I am the opposite. I don't mind manual in my truck, but everything else is automatic. I loathe shifting outside of work. I admit, while I have an auto in my pickup, I frequently use manual mode and select the shifts. But no clutch in anything but the truck. My ag tractor is hydrostatic.

I would think for older drivers, the auto is a godsend.
peterd Thanks this. -
And going forward it will limit the hiring pool for them to select from... Which is fine if they wish to do that ... But that "limiting factor" runs both ways.
I can drive a manual... I just opt to never do it... I would never apply to a manual only company...
And I'm ok with that too.

You can still special order one with a stick.
As for my truck... I have no need for one. -
No kidding... LOL

In the future, the new generation of truckers will feel that having to change gears manually is a thing of the passed and will question why they aren't working with a company that runs autonomous trucks.
