I'm from Long Island NY but drive the entire northeast. Constantly getting these trucks on my butt at 65-70 mph where there's no way they could stop in an emergency if needed. However, on an upgrade many slow down to 35-40 mph and refuse to move over. When you only have 2 lanes you can use sometimes you're stuck for miles. These trucks are usually the ones to roll over and dump debris, closing some if not all lanes.
This brings me to the main question, per load encourages driving like an idiot. No? I've witnessed many use an off or on ramp to pass on the right, unsafe lane change intimidating you to let them in, etc.. Most times you can tell the over weight trucks by how they lug up hill. Just seems to me by load is a very unsafe practice. Am I wrong?
Are most or all dump and waste paid per load?

You have to be aggressive in the northeast. If your not doing 70 your in the way...,,.
Most dump loads are by the ton.NightWind and Jim the driver Thank this. -
Yes. Most of the guys around here start in the wee hours of the morning to get in line and wait at the landfill. Then as you stated, they spend all day driving like idiots trying to squeeze as many loads in as possible. Too many also are apparently too lazy to properly cover their loads and go down the highway spilling trash all over the place. KRD and Mr. Bult’s are the big 2 you see around here and I know what KRD pays isn’t worth the hassle, spoke with them a few years back just outta curiosity.
And I know the county cops set up portables about once a month or so at one end of their route and pop them for overweight and vehicle safety violationsJim the driver Thanks this. -
Driving the north east is one particular reason I quit worrying about that rear view mirror within limitations. If Mr Dump wants by now come on bring it. Go away see you down the road. But he has to have the horses to get through.
What I watch for is cars engaging in insurance scam, fraud etc with me the target. Thankfully I can see them as they creep down the side of the trailer all 4 inside eyeballing super hard in the mirror. Juts before quickly pulling ahead 200 feet and setting on the brakes in my lane. (LIke i have not see that coming... been waiting for the show to start) And the company electronics can scream very hard stops all it wants to back to the shop. I don't have a camera anything thank god, but I do have my mind which contains the situation as it unfolded to be a very near thing.
Dump trucks are not in a particular hurry. The job will get done when it gets done. But we keep moving. That blacktop is cooling and there is only a certain time to get it into the paver. Unless we love to unload a thick solid cube and then ice pick at it? Forget it. Once in a while when we were empty we will do a little racing. but not on the major highways. I remember a wooden bridge we had to cross. And once off we had the option of following this winding gravel up and around or going straight up a 40 degree grass hillside with birds, flowers butter flies and trees up top. We ended up going straight up that grass and stopping just so on top. Bossman would pretend to curse us out for being stupid unsafe and so on. But he could tell we used just enough to get it up there and not so much as to be unsafe. My foreman been 6 years buried now after shoveling snow early for work stopped his heart. But it makes me happy to know that even then later in his life you can get some laughing out of him when we do a game with empty dump trucks on the job here and there.
Never mind the people wanting through your back door. If they really want to go through they will just have to pucker up and get it done. Mwah.
That's one reason I don't run the NE where possible. Aggression and other problems it brings out is a unnatural issue with such a pretty day and a wonderful people.NightWind and Jim the driver Thank this. -
Not covering the loads right is another issue. Trash flying out or sand and stone pelting you if you're behind them. I have to drive aggressively to get out of Long Island. There's no back ways. I have learned not to stress the idiots, you have to. With all the regs and push for safety there must be a better way, but what do I know?

Most driving pay structures encourage dangerous driving.
Cpm, percentage, and per load all encourage one to speed and dangerous passing to make more money. -
What would you all think about making hourly wages mandatory? Truth is companies pretty much know how long a run should take within a reasonable time frame. Would you lose money this way? I get paid hourly with OT, don't waste time because I want my day to end at a decent hour. I do see a small percentage of drivers going the speed limit (55-65) in the center lane when I know it's not due to load or inclines. I always think they are on hourly.
NightWind Thanks this.
