People do, because they can get $8-10k going back.
Spot market game is all about averages. Nobody would be paying you $5 per mile to go for Miami, if you were able to get out from there for $3 per mile

Yep, and it's only going to get worse. Why deal with all the bs that comes with trucking when you can make more at an 8-5 that has you home on the weekends? I left driving, and I couldn't be happier. You'd have to be a masochist to be an otr driver these days.

Issue with that is you could get a far higher average if you did other loads to get to CA. Pic is PA to CA, take a PA to TX load for +3 a mile than a load from TX to CA. More money overall to get to CA from PA.

My understanding is that freight leaving CA is paying well right now. At least 15-20 container ships sitting waiting to get into the Long Beach ports.

Correct, you can make even more money staying regional.
It's just there are people who want to do 1 and 1 long hauls, have contract obligations, have to be in a certain area by a certain time. There are different kind of scenarios, that make people book those loads

That's true. But it's the reefer guys that are and always have been driving the price on the east coast to west cost lanes.

They're getting upwards of 12k to go east att. They want to backhaul home, take a couple days off and do it again.
