Are Rookies taught how to use a clutch brake anymore?

    I'm good at what I do for a living......and again my mvr/record reflects such. But then again there are many people that think there is only one way to get a job done and done safely so I'm not at all surprised by the programed by a school people in the world.

    It's rather easy to roll up to a stop not downshifting all the way there. I generally grab about every third gear when coming down to a stop i don't downshift through every gear cause there is no need. As far as double clutching goes well I haven't since I passed my BMV test. I can but don't because it's so much easier not to and shifts smoother too. Key to shifting is learning what rpm you shift each gear at up and down. Once you learn that you can pretty much grab the right gear at any moment or speed you want to. I think anybody who's been driving for very long at all SHOULD know that but I don't think a lot of them do.

    I said "no comment"....doesn't mean I don't carry an opinion, just that I prefer not to get into this argument/discussion again.....it has been done too many times here on TTR

    Obviously you know where I was headed and what my position is on "coasting" to the light out of gear (yes there is a difference with being out of gear and "clutch coasting")....along with many others here on TTR.

    Why are these guys pulling their trailer brakes to begin with. I was taught to hold my thumb over the trailer supply knob and pull the tractor brakes only. Wait till winter when they freeze the pads to the drums and drag their trailer thru the t/s and flat spot the tires.:biggrin_2559:

    If your brakes freeze solid in the 10min it takes to fuel......that's some cold like I've never seen.

    I'm kind of glad I grew up the way I did...the experience may not have been good, but it has left me unafraid.

    when I went to the mill to get back in again. the teacher didn't show the guys about a clutch brake. when I asked he said they will learn that at there job. My trainer and it was his truck said don't worry it will take care of itself! so you see even veterans and he was a 30 year driver and OLD! don't know how to drive.

    Oh well....not going to turn this into an arguement lost n found but I'm very sure in my driving abilities. You have a style of driving that works for you and I have mine, all that really matters is its proven to work for me. Maybe you are one of those people that had to be told how to drive. I will end it with this, if a person really knows how to revmatch a transmission all of that unnessesary downshift drama can be avoided. Now keep in mind I'm talking about coming up to a stop light or stop sign, I'm not saying go down donners pass in neutral!
