Are the newer trucks really that bad, no longevity anymore?

I think if all the trucks had APUs and idling was limited the DPF problems would be much less

The Maxxforce was specifically targeted to technophobes -- "look, we keep it simple, none of this new-fangled DEF stuff!". Specifically people that DIDN"T want to step up to the next level of technology got hung out to dry.

I have a pre emissions series 60 detroit that has done me well for a year now. My average monthly truck upkeep expense is $400. A friend of mine recently bought a nearly new Kenworth T680. As he was driving home the lights began coming on and the tranny wasnt shifting right so he took it to a dealer. Long story short it was a couple weeks and $7,500 dollars later, "the cost of an overhaul for me," before he hauled his first load. The crazy thing is he loves it!!!! It makes 6.2 mpg!!! Ya I only make 4.5-5 but I only paid $21,000 for my truck too. So ya I guess I'm a dumb owner operator running my old piece of junk but I plan on doing what I'm doing cause its working for me. Long live old iron!!!

Apu on a day cab? I guess to provide heat or AC waiting at a plant for extended periods of time. I don't wait at a plant too often and I shut the engine off at the farms usually so that probably helps the life expectancy I hope.

The series 60 was a good engine. I think a manual shifted truck is going to have less problems with the transmission even on a newer truck like I drive. No pcm controlled trans here

Yes every big fleet buying new trucks trades them in when warranty is gone, and then they sell them to suckers like you who go "well swift, Werner, and all the big guys run them, they can't be all that bad." Your average big fleet can afford a few trucks that are lemons, I as a one truck guy buy one and it happens to be a #### up, I'm done, i can't afford 3k a month on a truck that might sit in the shop more than it's on the road. You wanna gamble with your money and everything you have go right ahead.

This is exactly why a glider has so much appeal. Best of both worlds. Most days I love my old bucket..

Then I see a new WS 4900 lowmax flat top, & for a day or 2, I can't stop thinking about getting one with a nice 3406E, N14, or even pulling the series 60 out of my truck to power it. New can still be cool. Just has to be powered by something reliable from the mid to late 90's. It's not that I hate all new trucks, just despise the ones with any of the dreaded 3 letters. EGR, DPF, DEF.

Why are you only averaging 4.5-5mpg with your series 60..?
    Is yours Pre EGR.?
    Are you running really heavy?
Do you drive really fast, or idle all night?

I run a very light weight operation, averaging only 40k-47k lbs. I see consistent 9+mpg ifta quarterlys. Run 70mph almost always.

I was getting close to 7 pulling 80,000 in a W900L. But then again, I was going 62.

I haven't done enough miles after the injectors to see if I'm getting better mileage.
