I've done the misclassified 1099 thing. On the future, you better write off any expense on those forms. That's the only way you won't get messed up. Whatever you buy on the road, write it off. It's bending of the rules somewhat, but you gotta donwhat you gotta do to not get screwed. The guy you're working for has all the expenses, fuel, tolls, repairs, etc. You can't write those types of things off. Anything you buy while you're out on the road, keep the receipt and write it off. They probably won't look at you because it won't be some outlandish amount of money like millions or so
