Not paid by the mile? It sure looks that way to me. By the trip? What do you mean? Miles by the book or computer? Who's book and who's computer?
Sounds to me like working for free. Just pay them for the exact amount of miles they drive. And pay them for sitting to load or unload. Is it really that complicated?
Are there any good OTR companies out there? "Really"

the only folks that i can think of that doesn't get paid by the mile are flat bedders and tanker haulers. ( as a company driver)

Trip and load mean the same thing.
When you take a load the company gives you the miles they are paying for said trip. They are basically telling you what they are paying you to deliver the load. They do not care how far you have drive, or how long you sit and wait it pays the same. The top 2 ways miles are calculated are HHG (house hold movers guide), and PC Miler. There are many others, but those 2 are the most popular. Both are just a computer program that the companies use to figure miles between cities.
Why should they pay drivers for work that they are willing to do for free? Drivers have talking and talking about changing the system, but they have zero organization.

Unless you are paid off the hub, you are not getting paid by the mile.

how does getting paid off the hub work. (I'm trying to get all the knowledge i can about this industry)

You get paid by the miles run on odometer...................
Mark -
Bill's dispatcher at Celadon flat out told him at least 10% of miles on every run he would not get paid for due to "Rand McNally miles". Might not sound like much but it adds up, especially when sometimes it was more like 15% or more, so "NO" he did not get pd by odometer miles unless I am misunderstanding what you say. Not being a &^%* !!!!

Very, very few companies pay by 'hub' or 'odometer' miles. Most pay on map miles.

very, very few companies pay off the odometer or hub....................
Most companies use a computer program the gives the miles between the pick up location and delivery location. It is usually the most direct route, usually not the one the driver is going to drive. This is all the miles that the company will pay, they don't care about detours or anything like that.
When I drove OTR my last year I was paid for 139521 miles, but put 153346 miles on the odometer. I was not paid for 13825 miles, that is over a month of miles I gave the company for free.
