Ya know, Dazed, if there is one thing that I have learned - loud and clear - mostly from the old-timers here is a no excuses, no BS attitude. They can smell it a mile away and will spare no words (or #####'s) when calling you out on it either.
Now, I'm not trying to be mean to you when I say this, because before I had a long talk with myself one day a while back, I used to be just full of excuses and reasons why something or another just didn't work out for me, too.
And the worst person I could lie to is myself.
Then one day I decided to take full responsibility for my actions and outcomes and it's amazing how things just seemed to start working out a whole lot better. You know what they say about luck, too - it's where PREPARATION meets OPPORTUNITY. This is a tough industry that will toss you out in a hurry if you can't cut the mustard. And BS is not going to cut it.
Now, about the "free" CDL training "just in case" @Chinatown has helped a ton of people find just the right spot so I can't imagine that his suggestions for you have been inadequate or are scams.
Secondly, there are probably CDL schools and/or community colleges that, through their financial aid departments, can manage to get you into a program free or mostly free TO YOU if you qualify. NOT free to the taxpayers footing the bill FOR YOU, of course. And frankly, I'd rather my share of tax dollars go to someone who has adequately researched and prepared for a job in this industry and is coming in eyes wide open and ready to take on the worst this job has to offer. With this kind of attitude you'd probably do very well and find a satisfying career. Enough said. Not trying to preach, Dazed. And I wish you best of luck going forward.
Are there any no contract companies that train?

If this is what you worry about, don't bother ... find something else because this issue will be the lease of your concerns if you get a cdl and a job.

Now that you mention it, I don't know a single investor in any business that does not want the operator to have skin in the game, too. Otherwise, they lack the monetary incentive to work hard and make things happen. Shouldn't be any different here.
