I always thought the early settlers must been a little bit crazy to leave all the bounty of the Rockies - water, food, shelter - and strike off across Utah's deserts for parts unknown. That was nuts!

The same could be said about the guy that discovered snails are edible.

I still have to wonder what the person who discovered animal milk was good was thinking as they tried it......................

Probably a whole lot of reasons. People bound for the gold rush in California, (can you imagine crossing Death Valley in the summer - - - in a conestoga? Or on horse back or mule?)
People running from the law. From their wives. From so called "religious persecution."
And of course that isn't taking into account the winters in the Rockies. . .

I live in the Harrisburg-Carlisle PA metro area. This is not a major metropolis like Boston, Chicago, NYC, etc. The only major cities my job takes me to are Baltimore and DC. I don't deal with Philly, Pittsburgh, NYC, etc. So the extra expense is not really there. The rent for my 973 square foot delux (dishwasher, washer and dryer in unit) two bedroom apartment is $680 a month. For something similar around Boston I would have to pay about 2k a month. Considering what I clear weekly pays for my rent with me having money left over I'm hardly doing bad at all. Not to mention I make almost twice what the median income for where I live.

As far as OTR in my area goes you're looking at 40 to 50k jobs. So actually if I went OTR I would be in the truck way more then I currently am and I would make a lot less per year. Also I don't really view it as settling either. I view it as wanting...stability? I guess that's the right term. I bounced around a lot in my twenties after getting out of the military trying to start my own business with my sister which didn't work out. Then going into truck driving which after 17 months OTR I just couldn't take it anymore. Then going to college on the post 9/11 GI Bill but not going on because quiet frank;y I wasn't going to be a doctor, a high priced lawyer, or have a lucrative STEM job that paid extremely well. That and my Post 9/11 GI Bill only pays for up to three years of schooling and me not wanting to go into tens of thousands of dollars in debt not to mention I was way past tired of starting over again from scratch so I went back into trucking but this time local. My life has been a lot more stable since than with me not bouncing around which is something I needed and didn't have before if that makes any sense.

I know what jb hunt does. Do you know what they have to do?lol. Jb. Hunt pretty much runs the trucking world right now. If you listen to am or sat. radio they tell you that they get their drivers home more frequently than any other large carrier on their ads. Have you ever ran jit freight or even just Ltl freight for a mega?If you did you would've understood the point of my comment instead of thinking I didn't know what kind of company Jb hunt is. Obviously you can't run solo to California on Monday and make it back to the terminal in Virginia on Friday for your weekly home time with a 62 mph truck and elogs lol
