For a month now, I've been driving with Arlo G Lott Trucking out of Jerome ID in the Long Haul Farm Commodities Division
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First off, pulling a 45' Walking Floor Trailer hauling farm commodities is a very different world from pulling refers or dry vans.
Most of the time you are in and out when loading and unloading, no waiting an eternity for the green light at a dock. Sometimes you have
to wait a bit if there is a couple trucks in front of you but it's rare (usually no more than an hour or two) and it gives me time to stretch out a bit or heat up a can of soup.
A lot of places that we deliver to are farms out in the sticks that are really hard to find. At some larger dairy operations you pull in, weigh yourself,
go drop the load, reweigh, and spend a half hour searching for someone to sign your bill lol
....it's different and I like it!
During my two day Orientation that I went through with two other drivers,(paid $50 a day) our safety director (40+ year Veteran Driver) took us out to lunch both days
and told us trucking stories from back in the 70's and 80's. He is a cool dude and It was a great experience.
My first week out I got about 2800 miles and I've been getting a minimum of 3000 miles per week @ .35 a mile since. (includes per diem)
This last week I got 3500 miles. They will run you!
(during the summer time, farm commodities is rocking with more loads to go around than trucks to haul them so I am told.)
I've worked for many companies that go through the motions and then throw you to the wolves after you get your truck assigned.
AGL is different. Many of the other drivers and office staff (also mostly former drivers) have been extremely supportive in the new job and I've traded phone #s with many of the other guys. They are very proactive about calling me routinely to check up on me and I've got the open invitation to call anytime for directions to obscure locations for deliveries and the like. Once I got my truck assigned they paired me up with one of their Vet million milers and he walked me through the shop and got me all of the gear that I needed to run a walking floor trailer. (50' air hose with blower nozzle, big screw driver, hard hat, respirator and such) and then gave me a crash course on running a walking floor with some tips and tricks.
On my last home time I had been with the company only about 2 weeks and it was my wife's and I ONE year anniversary.
They gave me 4 days hometime and my Dispatcher took my truck out and loaded it for me so I would be ready to roll when I came back to work.
All in all, my experience with AGL has been extremely positive! The people at AGL are very family oriented and are great people to work with!
Random Info:
- AGL has many different trailers...Walking floors, Belts, flatbeds, and tanks to name a few.
- They run Peterbuilt, Kenworths, Frieghtliners, Internationals, and I saw one Volvo.
- Company Paid Health Insurance after 90 days (whole family extra)
- Loose Leaf Logs (some trucks have paperless and eventually all probably will)
- No pets
- Rider policy but not during the winter months(obvious safety issue in the Northwest)
- Shop has no problem with installing Inverters
