    Listen to this man.

I don't know what preconceived notions you have about driving a truck but I promise you aren't missing anything.

Go there and train. Remember that CDL is national. Houston is the same as going to the deli the next block over for the day's lunch meat. I consider the entire USA in terms of where to go to do things, distance is meaningless.

Your military, if you have a enemy in sandpile Iraq 8000 miles away, you go fight him there. Or down the street to fight a disaster for a city. Etc. Right?

Stay in Perdue and get your degree. THAT will open doors I imagine. Trucking, anyone can do. But that degree will give you something to fall back on when and if trucking is finished in the future due to medical, retirement or even a wreck or incident. Anything can happen out there. Stay in college get that degree. I don't know anything at all about what you are studying but would imagine it will provide you with a future compared to what we did in our time.

You can be 90 and still be a trucker if you can pass the DOT and be lucky and mean enough to still throw pallets and unhook trailers etc.

Gary is just cdl school, then tanker training is in Houston or some other terminal after completion of cdl school.
@ethos was a trainer at Schneider Bulk, so maybe he will clarify.
Schneider Bulk also pays for private cdl school such as C-1.

College degrees are overrated. In trucking, a high school dropout or GED can start a career making over $60K after completing a 4 week school.

I will meet you half way on this.

Certain knowledge is necessary to do things very well. Yes the trucking can pay very well for as long there are humans still hired to drive them in the age of Uber and Otto computer AI trucks that are coming on. Truckers are a breed that is facing a future where they are not wanted or needed. So it's wise to make the money where it is still possible to do it.

Much of college is a waste. A fearful waste in many ways and produces nothing. But... we must have SOME higher learning to at least produce the doctor to work on the trucker's broken leg yes?

And working 60-70 hours a week for the rest of their life with little chance for "advancement".

I'm not saying a college degree is all that. It's not. But there are enough jobs that require a degree - in anything - that it's worthwhile to get it now if you can do so without accumulating a ton of debt. Hello GI Bill.

Congrats on the new born! Stay in college trucking isn't going anywhere. If anything look local.

No idea on that one. But if Schneider is running a school, I would go to it.

Since he has the GI Bill, I'd suggest he go to a private CDL school rather than a carrier based training program. At least then he will open up his options a bit further
