But most trucking schools are a month or less. Besides, if he can get it paid for with a year contract at Schneider then he saves his G.I money. I'm going to college now and I have enough to pay for my bachelor's and with that comes a monthly stipend. He can do the same and maximize his money and future opportunities.

Like everyone says you're good to go.Starter companies have a 2 or 3 yr wait after a reckless charge which you're pass that. When you start driving are you going to quit college, put your class on hold or how does that work?

Hey, I'm a retired Army guy that switched to trucking a year ago. I drive for Schneider pulling tankers and it's not too bad, I make really good money but I'm OTR driver and I stay out 3 weeks at a time and take 1 week off. I do this cause regional driving with 34 hours off a weekend wouldn't work for my situation and regional drivers don't get the long runs like OTR here at snbc it seems. I did the military apprenticeship program at Schneider and it payed me 1260 tax free dollars a month for a year every month. And tanker training is in Pittsburg (Coraopolis it's called) and Houston. I went to Pittsburg training and I live in North Carolina. My dispatch is in Pittsburg and I regularly even go their, it seems weird but maybe this helps me get long runs and make good with snbc.. most guys are surprised I'm not dispatched out of savannah like most are..maybe I just got lucky..

To the op, stay in school, get some business behind you just so you can understand what's going on. Trucking isn't going anywhere for a while and it is more important you have a fall back because of your family. This is the easiest to get into and the easiest to end up being forced out of, so cover your butt with more than just a through "I want to drive".

@Chinatown is correct, a degree is overrated, but I sure wish I'd finished before I got neck deep in the trucking business. As a man ages, changes occur in life and family, it's just nice to have every option available if you need or want a change.

If he has chapter 33 gibill then there is no cap on how much he can use, only the length of time he can use it. I'm looking at the idea of not getting trapped in a contract. Because seriously how many drivers do we see that get into a contract and never finish it then get strapped with a huge bill afterwards and then a ding on his DAC?
