I plan on more or less living in atruck as an OTR driver for awhile and think I will be fine if I can get a break with a hotel room every once in a while. In what situations does it work out that companies will often pay for the room?

I second what AZS said. If you choose to stay in a hotel from time to time then the bill will be yours. If you have a breakdown and the truck is in the shop then most companies will foot the bill.

It will be rare that the company pays a "layover" supplement for the typical driver at the typical truckload carrier. But there's nothing says you can't pay for your own room when the opportunity presents itself. (ideal location, available, during a reset, wait out weather, decent motel with good parking with decent amenities nearby, affordable rate, etc) I personally spend 1 to 2 nights a week in a room (my dime) but wouldn't have it any other way.

BTW, hotel charges can be used to reduce your taxable income if you itemize (as you should), sleeper or no sleeper so long as your logs say you're away from home.

Companies won't pay for a room just because you're tired of the trk.But like someone said, for brkdowns, maybe the weather is unbarable if your heat or ac is'nt working. But don't hold me to that.More companies then not have an idle policy and apus.

The good companies do pay for a hotel room when you're laid over for more than a night or in a spot where proper facilities to shower are not available.
    The cheap pricks don't.

-Posted from my company paid hotel room for the weekend.

there are a few private fleets that run daycabs OTR.. and put driers in motel every night, I am not aware of any companies besides private fleets that do that...I work for an industrial gas company and have styed in a motel 4 days a week for the past 13 years..Ive been from OK to MN and FL to TX running a one seat daycab..

We can get one hotel room a week that is reimbursed by the company.

Why would a company pay for your hotel room when you have a truck with a sleeper birth? Doesn't make any sense from the companies standpoint.

To keep you on the road where the truck can make money and not sit idle whlie you are out on hometime. Hotel stay would be more flexible as to keep you in position to do company business instead of your fixed home location.
