So we’ve all seen the wooden snow fences along some parts of I-80 in WY, but why don’t they just place an additional barrier right next to some parts of I-80 that are well known for accumulating snow that then becomes packed snow or ice. I am referring to blowing snow picking up and blowing snow onto some parts of I-80. So you’re driving down I-80 and the roads are dry, but suddenly you find a section of the road that has accumulated plenty of snow, say, on the right lane.
Aside from wooden snow fences, why doesn’t WY build snow barriers right next to I-80?

Wait lil bit. Climate change is coming.

Lack of funds. I've seen parts of interstates where they tried something like that, that stretch of trees on the north side of 90 just west of Mitchell SD comes to mind, it doesnt really help all that much because it sticks there when it blows off every where else in small snow squalls.

Because the engineers say what they have now is the best system.
I don't know but a guess would be if there was a barrier or wall of some type parallel on either side of the road that barrier would/could also trap the snow on the road surface. -
just a wild guess, cuz it's been decades since i been that far west, maybe they cannot do as you ask, cuz the animals cross more so in those areas, than in the others?Snailexpress and PE_T Thank this.

Which is cheaper, flip switch to turn on sign "Road Closed", or build hundreds of miles of more snow fences that don't help much?????

We only need them on certain parts of I-80, and if the barrier had to stretch for many miles, then a wildlife migration bridge can be built. I’ve seen a few in the US going over interstate highways.

Snow fences do work, but what I’m referring to is snow barriers immediately right next to the highway. Snow fences are usually a bit apart from highways.

those migration bridges can't be too cheap. i'd think that endangered species would be taken into consideration for such a bridge over, an over population of useless deer, elk, etc.PE_T Thanks this.

WY IFTA tax is currently 24 cents per gallon burned. They should throw in some 10 more cents. All in favor, say “Aye!”
