I was told by ironpony that i will have to do the cdl thing all over again with there school. I have my cdl and did not want to start over again. I wanted to just go to an outside school in va. and do full time class and graduate, then prime can bring me straight to orientation and go with trainer from there. I understand what your saying about it being free after a year and all, but if i did not have my cdl i would do that.

Here's the deal. You have very little experience, and the driving you did is over 2 years old. No OTR company is going to hire you to drive without retaking your entire CDL training. Most companies want to see a minimum of one year continuous experience, and many more require 2 years to be considered a minimally skilled driver. A CDL school graduate without experience has about 6 months maximum to find a job and start driving. Beyond that time period, most folks have to take a refresher course.

Sorry - that's the way the industry works - not just Prime. You're best off saving your money, and taking advantage of the free training.

If you don't trust IP call yourself. Most if not all companies requires some kind of continuous driving experience. They may give you a break and throw you on a trainers truck for 30,000 miles they could say no experience in last 6 months sorry need to start over. Good luck

So would i have to do as far as going to prime school is turn in my cdl to dmv here in va. then once i get my background approved with prime and employment gaps closed up, then they bring me in to the school where i take the tests for my cdl permit, then once i pass that i go on to classroom where i learn how to shift gears, do backing, after so many weeks then go to dmv to do the final test, then get a mo. cdl then go with trainer. Am i right?

I hope i don't have to turn my cdl in, but if prime says that, i'll have to do it. Maybe prime will switch my cdl from va. to mo. once i take the final test at the dmv. I know i will need my own money to pay those fees. I did not doubt what you said earlier, i was just trying to find a way to keep my cdl, i don't mind going thru the process in prime school, just did not want to give up the cdl. i will call prime to see what they say after my employment gap has been closed. Thanks for your input ironpony.

There is no tests at the dmv.... no classroom either... I just went through PSD in May/June. You get your permit, finish orientation, then hit the road with an instructor for the required hours. Go back to SPRINGMO n test out. The examiners work directly for Prime. DOT comes in n audits the testing to make sure it is done properly. After you pass they shuttle you down to the dmv to get your license.

Not sure who you would have to give up to, but you would have to surrender it

Its the same process everywhere... federal law requires that you cannot have more than one license. Its not a big deal to transfer that license back to say VA either...
