As someone who works in operations, we are hiring outside cdl school grads.
The reality is such that there is so many TNT trainers that the you're better off being an instructor and keeping a student as a trainee.
Also, it's no longer a simple list where you move up the chain. There are a series of metrics where a TNT trainer with less tickets, service failures, incidents, critical events etc will be inserted into the list ahead of anyone with a lesser score.
The more successful TNT trainers return to the list ahead of those with lesser scores.
Im certainly not saying you are inferior in training. Sheer numbers of available TNT trainers and the small number of hires from outside schools pretty much limits you to availability within your fleet.
Knowing Jacks fleet you're likely to get a TNT from one of his instructors. Unfortunately, most to nearly all keep students for TNT.
If he can help it, Jack is not going to let a student train on another fleet if he can help it. he keeps a very detailed spreadsheet to track his students and trainers.
I'd consider becoming an instructor, or at very least remind him weekly if he's got any instructors not keeping a student that he keep you in mind.
We certainly are hiring qualified outside cdl school grads. Just don't let too much time from graduation pass. They have a certain window where they won't take them

Will someone going to Prime without their CDL make less than a person going to Prime with their CDL?
Basically if I paid $5k to a driver mill and went to work for Prime would I be getting paid the same as someone who got their license through Prime? -

Granted, I came in during a flood of new hires. Still, Prime should have a system in place to ensure all incoming students get placed on a truck within a week of finishing orientation. -
I'm headed to orientation on the 20th. I just asked my recruiter about home time during training as my brother is getting married on September 12th. I guess during training home time is up to the trainer, which I understand.
However are some trainers more lenient/flexible and willing to negotiate on home time? I'm honestly happy with running non stop through the entire PSD program other than the two days I'll need to be at my brothers wedding. It'd even be worth it to me to put my trainer up at a hotel and invite him to the wedding as I really don't want to wait till after the wedding to start working.
Does this seem at all possible or should I just get a part-time job and wait the 3 months or so before I get started at Prime? -
Waiting is your very best option.
-
You can wait or get started and more than likely I trainer wouldn't mind letting you take a few days off
-
I've been a PSD instructor coming on two years now. Only looked for a TNT because I liked the experience with my last one I took as a favor. Usually don't do that phase. -
I'm sure if you're up front about that first thing with your trainer they won't have an issue getting you home. Stuff happens, if they can't work around it wait until you can find someone else who will.
