You are. Correct. Some weeks are slow. So far I been running good since I returned to Prime. Just a reminder don't look at the miles. Look at the revenue. I just finished a load that was 545 miles. But it paid $1,450.00 total to the truck.

Sorry, my mistake, but it is like a roller coaster ride. you just gotta put some cash aside when times are good cuz ya know that it will swing the other way soon enough.

I am a newbie to Prime and headed to Springfield from Houston, Tx Monday Feb. 28, 2011 at 7am on a bus - I am excited to start this new phase of my life and to get trained. I have a couple of questions:

1.) They have me listed as a D driver?? My instructions say:

This assignment is made by the Safety Department and is based on your past driving experience and the type of operation. If the assignment is B or C or D, you will be expected to run team for a period of time to familiarize you with our operation.

I have seen info about moving from a C driver to a B driver and the finally an A driver as I move through training - but I haven't seen anything about a D driver.

2.) As I said, I am live in Houston, Tx. I have a little girl. I realise I am not going to get much home time over the next 6 months - but when I do have down time - am I gonna be able to get back to Houston? Does Prime pull loads out of Houston?

Thanks fro having this blog. I have been lookin' around here over the last 6 weeks or so as I have been deciding about who to go with etc. I have learned a lot from you people! Thank you! :biggrin_25517:

A D-seat is a student driver - you'll get bumped to C-seat when you get your CDL.

Yup. There's a number of places we load at including Galveston. More importantly, you'll get to know the HEB warehouse much too well!

Gad! Our secrets are out!! Good luck!

Here's the aggravating thing about Prime. I call their recruiters and they consistantly tell me they don't hire students from Central Florida. But one of my fellow students met an O/O or L/O that works for Prime thru a friend. One call from this veteran driver to an insider at Prime and they OK my fellow student to be processed. Typical Mega-carrier BS!

It does depend on how far south you live - since you haven't mentioned where this guys is from its hard to say. And, yeah, as with anywhere sometimes it does depend on who you know.

A bit of advice... move out of the sticks.

Here is a suggestion. Get a rental mail box from another area and use that as your address. If you get one from the UPS store it will look like an apartment address and they will never know the difference or really care. I do this myself as I live in Hawaii.

I am totally new to driving. I have been in restaurants for the last 30+ years. I am scheduled to start orientation with Prime in March. Is there any advice you can offer a total newbie? It is exciting and a little scary changing careers and totally reinventing myself. My wife has her CDL and used to drive flatbeds so I have a pretty good idea of what life on the road is like. I would like to know what to expect during training.

    Thanks

I am currently in the cdl training program. Make sure you bring ALL your necessary paperwork to orientation (B/C, passport if you have one), DD214 if military, and try to get your permit.before you arrive at Prime...you can not test on the simulators without your permit. Once you get an instructor you will go out on the road for a minimum of 100 hours. Plan to be out for around 4 weeks. During this time you will not be paid, however Prime will advance you 200 dollars a week if you need it for food on the road. The training is great...you will experience your training in real world conditions. I look forward to seeing out on the road.
