I've never put myself in the position where that's an issue. Those that do need to learn time management

I’ve taken a 10 hour break relatively close to home a couple of times because I was out of legal driving hours. Stuff happens.

    bzinger Thanks this.

I’ve also PCed it 20 miles back to the yard after dropping a trailer and running out of hours. Not advancing a load, no problem!

There have been 2 occasions, where, despite my best efforts to put together enough recap hours, I have had to take a 34 a couple of days before home time. As stated above, "Stuff Happens"!

    bzinger and tarmadilo Thank this.

Just an FYI. That is advancing the load as the the load at that point it the empty trailer. Not judging, just letting you know how DOT will see it.

Thanks. I actually bobtailed, so I think I was legal, but it’s good to know they consider an empty as a load.

In a nutshell the criteria is "Can I do this in a rental car?" In almost all cases if the answer is no you can't use PC. Stuff like taking the truck to the shop, going back to the terminal, going to pick up a trailer, etc.
If you are going to go grocery shopping, going to a movie, etc does qualify.

Obviously that's not 100%, but it is a very good rule of thumb to stay out of trouble.
