I have been doing my research and noticed that some people in Odessa/Midland complain about the strong oil fumes in the air from the oil boom in Texas. Some say that you can smell the strong pungent aroma of sulfur from the oilfields 50 miles away. They told me if you have asthma its best to stay away from the area because the oil fumes are toxic and will cause asthma or make it worse. Ironically, I have asthma.

Plus I am looking for an apartment in Odessa. You cannot find a studio apartment for less than $1,000 in a lower-middle class neighborhood.
I'm glad I am finding this stuff out now.:biggrin_2558:

Sounds like you couldn't have cut it out here. You have to make a hand not a face. Good luck.

If you find fumes offensive, don't work in the oil field. Pumps, generators, power units constantly running on the well site. There was and probably still is a refinery on the south side of Odessa, not to mention the many, many other facilities through out that area of the country. Even in other parts of the state (Luling and Luders are two I can think of) there is a strong sulfur smell.

The scent of H2S is common, but harmless. It's the H2S you DON'T smell that will kill ya'. It's dry and dusty out here, so depending on the severity of your asthma you might need to stay away. My wife developed asthma after we moved here. Her doctor sees patients all the time who move here and develop asthma due to the dust and semi-arid climate. My wife's asthma isn't too bad. She works inside and we're working on getting a humidifier for the apartment.

You might prefer south Texas. It's not nearly as dusty.

Oklahoma smells like flowers (and cattle).

Tornadoes don't scare me at all. The dusty, polluted conditions could be a health risk for me though. Kinda sucks.

I am in Corpus Christi surrounded by refineries and I don't smell anything unless I am right next to one. I think the air off the Gulf keeps things pretty fresh.

The refinery in Artesia can get a little intense at times-being downtown and all, but hey-that's just the smell of money!
