Recently got into an at fault accident.
My first one.
I have some speeding tickets that are going to drop off next year, I was waiting on that to get my CDL.
I was cited for unsafe lane change and shown a traffic cam video that basically hoses me as the at fault party while i was at the hospital due to possible concussion, I was extremely disoriented after the wreck.
It was a family that I merged into and the men declined the hospital while the woman and child went. What I hear from the officer that took the report is that all is well with the other party, and I seem to have gotten the worst of it due to being in a much smaller vehicle.
Am I screwed in my chances of wanting to become a trucker for longer than the year i was already planning on waiting?
I'm willing to hire a lawyer to keep the ticket points off my license but unsure if that will make a difference.
At fault major accident. Newb employment prospects?

Me personally because I’m old and don’t give a fluff, would just own it and move on.
If I was younger I’d skip the lawyer and just get a hearing with the court magistrate…see if they can reduce it in some way.tscottme and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
In Illinois if other party doesn't show up in court ( 99% ) - any related ticket dismissed, including LEO absence ( ... Atlease its been this way since i got my last ticket ... Probably 10years or so ago
)

Save your money on the lawyer. Go to a defensive driving course that may knock points off in some states(research) . The training will help you to be a better driver. It really pays nowadays to be a better driver (health and wealth). Those bad habits catch up to you quickly (had them many years ago).

Have you already been to Defensive Driving classes? Is that an option. One call to the courthouse should tell. My State doesn’t allow Defensive driving courses in in lieu of convictions for CDL holders. Never taken one. I’ve have had tickets “taken under advisement”. The Officer and DA have to agree. Negotiated the day of Court, by showing up early. It’s their way of cutting down on the Court docket. Works best at a busy Court. Tried it at a small Court. No negotiations. At this point, I’d get a Lawyer. At least file an appeal if possible after you lose on your own. Then hire a Lawyer. If you’re set on getting your CDL. The cost is nothing compared to what you’ll lose by postponing getting it. You’ve already allowed yourself to be convicted of 2 offenses. One considered Careless Driving under the CDL rules. 2 careless driving criteria tickets within 3 yrs. is a 3 mo. Suspension of a CDL. Get a 3rd careless and it’s another 3 mos. You’re probably better off not having your CDL yet. I’ve been through similar situation. When I was young, had to wait 36mos. to get my CDL, after getting a 3 mo.suspension. It cost me 3 yrs of experience and lost income potential. 15 yrs ago, after years of no tickets, I got convicted of 15 over, and within a year, I had my first at fault accident. I almost got a 3 mo. suspension. Add the possibility of another freak accident, the inability to get hired for a year, not knowing if I’d face a 3 mo. suspension, the uncertain was stressful. My regret was getting the first 15 over. I should have hired a Lawyer, but didn’t since I’m an O/O and don’t risk repercussions from an employer, and didn’t want to spend the money. Thought Id be OK. I broke my own rule. That is ALWAYS hire a Lawyer. It’s a drop in the bucket, compared to the alternative. I paid $650 for a Lawyer, and an $800 fine to get the Accidents careless Driving ticket changed to an equipment violation. 0 points. Bought another Truck, and haven’t had a ticket since. Things can spiral out of control fast. Hire a Lawyer. Get a good idea of what your options are for the future. Once you have a timeframe, go ahead and get the CDL, maybe through a State sponsored job works grant, or a community college. Might be an affordable option. You’ll have plenty of time to figure that out. Take control. Be patient. Think Longterm. Before you know it, it will just be a bad memory. Hopefully a Learning experience. Best way to avoid a speeding ticket, is to not speed. Not at all, ever. Get used to being flipped off, Lol. Who cares. You win.
