ATF Parking their trucks

Not too long ago, diesel fuel seemed like a bargain compared to the price of gas. Now, diesel is higher than gasoline and the cost is forcing some out of business. "I think in this yard here, there's 15 or 16 trucks," says George Dickey who owns ATF Trucking in Savannah.
Dickey has parked about half of his fleet of big rigs (26 trucks) saying he "can't afford to drive them."
The current price of diesel fuel is about $4.75 locally. According to the Energy Information Administration, the price is up 22 cents in just the last week.

Dickey says in the past three months, he's lost thousands of dollars. "We can't afford to keep the drivers on the payroll." he tells me.
So far, he's laid off 24 employees. "We've tried to keep the main core of drivers so we'll have something to build back to in case the prices stabilize," he tells me. "But if they don't, then we're looking at maybe another round of layoffs."

He shows me truck after truck parked in a gravel parking lot near his office off Dean Forest Road. "And they'll stay parked. I don't have any intention of operating them at a loss," says Dickey.

He still has about 25 trucks running, but says his plight is much like that of independent truckers and he's not sure what to try next. "I've no idea where it will lead," he says. "I'm just hoping something will stabIlize soon so that we'll survive."
